Baileys mum
My 10 month old Australian terrier puppy has a lot of dandruff through her coat. I was just wondering what could be causing this, could she lacking something in her diet.? Is there anything I should be adding to her food to help eliminate this? She is currently being fed half EP Holistic & half raw food diet. She is also given a good brush every day & is bathed once a week. Any help & tips will be most appeciated. Thanks Nicole Edited December 13, 2008 by Baileys mum
puggy_puggy
Are you completely washing her shampoo out? What shampoo do you use?
Baileys mum
I use "Rudducks" Just puppies extra gentle conditioning shampoo for puppies (bought from pet stock ) It says on the front of the bottle: A mild, safe & non - irritating tearless formula with natural oils & Lanolin to protect the coat. & yes I am completely rinsing it out. 4 Paws
I give a supplement that contain the essential fatty acids EPA and DHA. Fatty acids are easily destroyed by the processing of commercial dog foods and deficiencies lead to dandruff and dry coat, which in turn can predispose to the 'itchy dog' syndrome
wolfgirl
Personally I think bathing once a week is too much, you are stripping the natural oils out of the coat so the skin is dry and flaking. I would be adding sardines with oil into the diet and suggest bathing only when necessary
puggy_puggy
Try either adding Omega 3 or evening Primrose Oil to her diet. Do you feed fish at all? The only times I have come across Dandruff is either on pugs that have had fleas or black pugs that haven't been washed or brushed for a long time. Seeing that you bath and brush regularily possibly try a different shampoo and the diet additives. There might be a possibility that she has a condition like psoriosis. Kelpie_Pup
I would say once a week may be a bit too much.. it could definitely br stripping your dogs skin of oils. It can be hard when you have an inside dog that needs washing We sometimes add a small amount of avocado to Halle's food.. or just feed it to her on it's own. We also make sure we rinse and rinse and rinse again when we wash her If you can get the hose attachments (we bath Halle in the lanudry tub-it attaches to the spout and has about 1m of hose, and the end of it is like a shower head but looks like a stuff brush.. about $4 from Woolies ) It gets right down to her skin to remove the shampoo and she loves the massage. We only wash Halle when she needs it.. she is an inside/outside dog so generally about every 4-6 weeks, depending on how stinky she is!
oakway
You can bath the dog as often as you wish. Just use a TOP quality shampoo dog or human AND conditioner, not something of the shelf at the super market. Most of us that wash dogs regularly for shows pay anything up to $30 - $40 for 500ml of shampoo then have to purchase the conditioner. As we have NO problems it's worth it. Yes you can wash weekly providing a good quality shampoo. Aloveen or the like. Something PH balanced for dogs. A human product is not great as dogs have a different PH level to us and it is more likely to strip the oils.
