julesluvscavs
Hi everyone Just wondering is it normal for fatty lumps ( or what every they are called?) on dogs, to increase in size..? If it is normal, should one still get it checked it out ? I've always been under the impression they aren't cancerous? InspectorRex
Fatty cysts/lypomas are always best checked by a Vet, they can do a needle aspiration on the spot for you
julesluvscavs
Thankyou for your response InspectorRex I had it checked out a while ago, and it was nothing then, but it has since grown.. I'm still paranoid from when my last dog had a lump, and it turned out to be cancer It's along the tail bone. InspectorRex
Okay if it is on the tail it could very well be what my avatar girl had- an Apocrine cyst( cyst of the sweat glands) and it will continue to grow unless surgically removed. Phoebe's was right up near the top of the tail on the underside of the tail. Best get a Vet to check it and mention about the Apocrine Cyst
puggy_puggy
Jules with things like lumps no matter how hard you try not to think about it they play on your mind. For your sanity, at least, go get it tested again. My boy has a lump on his chest. I was pretty sure that it was just a fatty cyst but was freaking out untill I got it tested. Loraine
My neighbour's dog had a fatty lump removed on Tuesday. It was on her leg and growing so that it rubbed on the other leg. Vet did not think it was anything nasty, but should be removed as it was uncomfy for the dog. Dog is now home and well. (BTW she is 12 yrs old, a kelpie, cattle X dog.) Bilbo Baggins
Jules my first Cav had one on her tail and it was getting bigger so the vet removed it. Benign but unfortuatley she chewed her dressings and swelled the bandage and this cut off her circulation and the tail died so had to be removed. No problems but had to wag her whole back. Hi BB I vaguely remember you telling that story once in the Cav thread.. Oh how unfortunate that she chewed her dressings, and it swelled and had to have her tail cut off But good that it wasn't anything nasty ! I can imagine her wagging her whole back ! very cute hehe If they aren't nasty then (if found clear by a biopsy), and they don't get in the way.. then would there be any need to actually remove it then? I can't see it being a nuisance on a tail?? Edited December 11, 2008 by JulesLuvsCavs
InspectorRex
Yes Phoebe's tail healed up superbly Jules. She wanted to lick the stitches so I just dry bandaged the tail( you put dry gauze pad over the wound and wrap it in Vet Wrap and also get the Vet to give you some Clavulox to stop possible infection seeing air cannot get totally to the wound) I have used this method on many a dog over the years as I loathe putting a "bucket" on their head and it has always worked
julesluvscavs
Oh thats great Phoebe healed up very well then ! If Renae does end up needing it removed, I will be sure to take your helpful advice , thankyou !
corvus
Penny has had many fatty lumps over the years. They nearly always grow bigger with time. I always get them checked by the vet and generally only get them removed if they are causing her discomfort. The last couple of big ones that got removed were a bit too big and left gaping holes in her that had to be drained. She got one removed a few months ago at age 12 and recovered very slowly. I have decided to get any others she has removed when they are small as at least it's just a minor wound, then, rather than waiting to see if it gets big enough to impact on Penny's quality of life, which usually seems to happen in the end. julesluvscavs
Thanks for your response Corvus Poor Penny having to get them all the time... I am glad she's been ok ! It does pay to stay on top of any lumps doesn't it... Wonder what causes them ?
julesluvscavs
We took our two dogs to a heart specialist clinic yesterday, and I showed the specialist Renae's lump.. He said it 'appeared' to be a type of cyst, he did explain more about it, but he didn't think it is anything to be worried about in his opinion, but to have a needle biopsy done to be on the safe side Edited December 14, 2008 by JulesLuvsCavs
