KitKat Posted December 7, 2008 Share Posted December 7, 2008 Ok...got family moving down to Canberra to Queanbeyan in the very near future and they have an older Lab with newly diagnosed diabeties. They will probably be after a second opinion regarding treatment etc as they've not been so happy with the diagnosis/treatment so far. Occasional kenneling will also be a must - so if anyone has some recommendations for both kennels and vets down that way please let me know so i can pass on the info At this point the Lab is requiring 12hourly injections so a kennel that will look after that would be great as well Thanks all! Mooper Posted December 7, 2008 Share Posted December 7, 2008 For that level of care, I would recommend talking with BarneyMacRosie here on DOL about Don't Fret Pet, where the dog would be in the carer's home for the duration of kennelling. It would probably require the dog or at least your family to meet with the potential carer(s) first, so that everyone is happy, but if your family don't need kenneling straight away that won't be a problem. Regarding vets, many folks on here have never found fault with Hamish from West Queanbeyan Vet Hospital. He seems to go above and beyond, for rescues and pampered pets. West Queanbeyan Vet Hospital gets my vote. I used to take my own pets to CVH but have changed to west Queanbeyan. The vets have been the same for the three-four years I have been going there, and Hamish (head vet) owns the place. I found at CVH that the owner isnt often around and the vets come and go a bit. Tailwag Posted December 7, 2008 Share Posted December 7, 2008 (edited) I use the Animal medical centre (phillip - woden) and use Sandra Hassett there great vet (also very good performance vet who does chiro), the vet at Faddon is also very good Malcolm and Karen would be the only two i would use there. Hamish at Uriarra Rd Queanbeyan is also very good (West Qbyn Vet) Tara Kennels are good for boarding. Havnt used anyone else. If you can't find a kennel that can do the injections, an option is to ask somewhere like CVH about veterinary boarding. We boarded our cat there recently when all our cat sitters fell through. The cat was too sick to be in an ordinary cattery, and on about 4 different kinds of meds. It wasn't outrageously expensive but may be more so for a dog. TangerineDream Posted December 7, 2008 Share Posted December 7, 2008 (edited) Yep, I'll add my (historical) vote for West Queanbeyan too - haven't been there for about 14 years but they were absolutely brilliant when I lived in Queanbeayn (84 - 90) - used to take my Dobes back up to see them even when I lived in Melbourne and they obviously still are great....... My SIL recommended it to me, and they live nearby, so I started there when staying with brother/SIL. They apparently saw Malcolm from years back with a dog they had. WreckitWhippet Posted November 16, 2011 Share Posted November 16, 2011 A word of warning when it comes to boarding kennels in the area, go and have a look at the kennels and ask to see the daily exercise areas. There is one big kennel that will leave your dog standing in it's own poo and wee and will hose out around it daily for the duration of it's stay. She's a real sweetheart, does lots of fostering of working dogs (and other dogs) and seems to love what she does. From memory, Don't Fret Pet no longer has a Canberra franchisee and is run remotely. Who knew? When I phoned earlier in the year, it wasn't possible to make a booking and at that time the website said that they were looking for a Canberra franchisee! :D That's why this year OH is going back to Canada and I am staying at home with the dogs!!!
