Scarlet
Congratulations - the best news. Does the vet want to check in a few months/year or so?
Meeka17
Congratulations - the best news.Does the vet want to check in a few months/year or so? I will take the puppy to a vet in my town on Monday because the breeder likes you to get them checked by a vet 48 hours after I pick her up. Fingers crossed the murmur will be completely gone otherwise it should definately disappear by the time her 12 week health check comes around! Loving my Oldies
What a nerve wracking time you and the breeder have had. I am glad you are taking the puppy. I wouldn't have been able to advise you one way or the other, but if I'd been so bold I would have said go ahead :p . I had a puppy diagnosed with a heart mumur on the day I collected her and took her to my vet. People asked me why I didn't take her back, which astonished me, because by then she was my dog, the way you have felt with your little one. She had lots of other things go wrong and didn't live very long, sadly, but her situation was entirely different from that of your puppy. Looking forward to the first day home photos. Jed
Hi Meeka, pleased to hear your puppy only had a "puppy murmur" which will resolve. At 6 weeks, "things" are still forming, so it is possible a murmur will resolve by 8 - 12 weeks. Also, if pups are checked shortly after eating, murmurs will be detected, which aren't there at the next check. Although obviously, your puppy's murmur was not of the latter variety. Some CKCS do have MVD, but now that testing has been available for some years, it is possible to choose from stock which is clear by parentage. Most CKCS with problems are from puppy farms or BYB who do not check their breeding dogs for MDV. By purchasing from an ethical breeder, who ensured the parents were clear, you should have no problems.

I think I might need to look at getting pet insurance!
Jed
MVD doesn't present as a murmum at 6, 8 weeks, only much later. And, I don't think pet insurance would cover it, as the pup already has the murmur. I am the fortunate owner of a delightful (sometimes) 9 year old cocker spaniel, who has a horrible double sided murmur which he has had since birth. It was detected at 6 weeks when he went to be vaccinated. Had no idea what the outcome would be when he was little, but it's never caused him any grief - he leads a very normal life. Whether it will become a problem as he ages is in the lap of the gods. And, I've had 9 great years. And he has too. All dogs aren't perfect, and sometimes, the ones with little imperfections are the best ones.

That's good to hear that a dog can live a happy and long life with still a minor health problem. I my puppy is a very special little girl. She will be very spoilt! I have heaps of toys ready for her! She will be one little princess.
BittyMooPeeb
Hi Everyone,Just thought I thank the people that have given me advice about the heart murmur detected in my puppy. She went for another check at the vets yesterday and was examined by 2 different vets and both of the vets could barely hear her murmur. It is barely even a Level 1 murmur. The vets tell me it is very unlikey that the murmur is related to Mitral Valve Disease as this condition is usually diagnosed when the dog is nearly an adult. The murmur is not continuous either which is a good sign that the murmur is not Patent Ductus Arteriosis as the murmur should be continuous if the puppy has this condition. That is wonderful new Tameka! I am so glad things seem to be working out. It sounds like you have wonderful, supportive breeder who will no doubt help if any problems do arise (I dont think they will though!)
