RoxyNHemi
So Cruise is a 4.5mth Westie, half an hour ago he went all funny, and threw up this gross brown, with veggies that he was fed this morning with his mince and rice stuff. ever since then about ever 5-10 minutes he is going outside to throw up thick bile. I have slightly changed his diet as of last night, He was on Eukanuba biscuits with Tuckertime occasionally, but I last night I cooked some mince, rice and vegies, he had a small amount last night and again this morning with his biscuits. He has also had some bait this weekend while at the show (just small amounts of polony and liver) Should I be concerned, or have I just upset his stomach, and perhaps the mince was too rich for him. Thanks in advance Sarah Edited November 30, 2008 by CruiseNRoxy
DeltaCharlie
I would be getting him to a vet. Throwing up more than once, let alone every 5 minutes isn't good. He is also at risk of becoming dehydrated if he continues to throw up, it is incredibly easy to dehydrate a dog, especially a pup. It could turn out to be nothing but you will never forgive yourself if it turns out to be something major and you delayed.
RoxyNHemi
So, in the past 15-20 minutes he has stopped, i have made sure he has had a drink of water, and he is sleeping. Should I leave him? Take him to the vet in the morning? The throw up was like he had had the runs out of his mouth.
Animal House
Can you check to see if he is dehydrated? Puppies (even older ones) can dehydrate so quickly, especially with throwing up so much. Poor little fella. It could be the meal he had, or it could be gastro, or parvo, or anything. Check his gums for the capillary refill time (explained below) Signs of dehydration can include a lack of elasticity to the skin, and a dry mouth and nose. Dehydrated dogs will also experience a delay in capillary refill time. To test for this, pull the dog's lip away from its gum (gently) and press a finger against the gum until the area whitens. Release your finger and the color should return to the area almost immediately. A delay could be an indication of dehydration. If he throws up again, I would definitely give your vet a call and tell them whats been happening, they will advise you.
RoxyNHemi
Thanks for that Cazablanca. His colour returns straight away. Im thinking its possibly something hes eaten, there was some of the vegies in some of his sickness, Im thinking maybe the mince I got for him was too rich for his little stomach. He has been inside with me for the past hour now sleeping. Will keep an eye on him overnight, and call my vet if anything happens.
Animal House
Its quite possible the food has caused it, just keep a close eye on him, especially if he develops diarrohea. A few cases of Parvo about, and gastro can also be quite deadly if not treated. If he has a good night, I would just feed some boiled chicken and rice for the next few days, to give his tummy a rest. Let us know how he gets on.
RoxyNHemi
Hello I had to come to work today, I was a bit worried about leaving him at home, although he was his normal self thism orning, so demanded OH go home and check him between his clients, he seems to be fine. I was thinking about a vet trip, but think I could be over reacting. I think he has just had an upset stomach. Thanks for your advice
puggy_puggy
If he hasn't thrown up again then it most likely was his food. Dogs throw up things that their bodies can't digest, the body wants it out. What sort of mince are you feeding? Hope it's not minced chicken carcusses (dog mince) as you should never feed cooked bone. If you are wanting to feed a RAW or BARF diet get rid of the rice, food process the veggies/fruit and feed meat that has bone in it.
RoxyNHemi
It was human beef mince, boiled with veggies and rice (kinda like a casserole), I had mixed it with his Eukanuba biscuits I have gone out and invested in some BARF patties, and will start to slowly introduce them. Animal House
Good to hear he is doing okay. I wouldnt fuss with changing his diet just yet...........most vets advise to feed a bland diet after vomiting episodes...... just feed him some boiled chicken and white rice, small amounts to see how his stomach handles it. Keep him on that for a few days, and then you can switch over gradually to the barf patties if you want to.
