Garden Girl
Hi all - my 3 and a bit month old girl has really runny poo but is her usually energetic demonic self apart from that. Is she too young to fast for 24 hours? I gave her rice for breakfast - no lunch and pumpkin and rice for dinner...so she missed out on her usual lunch. But wondering if her poo doesnt improve should I fast her or not? Thanks J
persephone
I wouldn't have given her tea... let the gut sort itself out overnight... If she is still runny tomorrow.. a vet visit or phone call may be an idea.. just in case.
DeltaCharlie
Umm pumpkin is something people generally give dogs to loosen their stools. So I am assuming that it will make them worse. What is her typical diet like (when she isn't sick)? The only 2 things you have mentioned I steer clear of whenever possible with my dogs.
Garden Girl
I heard pumpkin firmed their stools?? More confusion. I'll check it out. She usually has pro plan for her meals, sometimes with a bit of yoghurt - sometimes replaced with something like a chicken drumstick or wing. ness
My girl had a dicey tunmy for a week or so after she arrived and I was told to feed her cooked chicken and rice. I think at first I was only feeding a tablespoon or so and more rice then chicken did that for a few days before reintroducing her dry food. Rebanne
I fasted a 6 week old kitten once for 24 hours, under vet advice. Kitten survived, so did I. You could certainly fast a pup for 12 or 24 hours, but only withold food, still leave the water down.
Colliewood
Boiled chicken or bbq'd (no skin) and rice small amounts always works well for mine when they were unwell. (under vets instructions)
ShesaLikeableBiBear
Our two pups had the squits at 6 weeks old. Under vet advice we gave them scourban and fasted them for 24 hours.
puggy_puggy
Has she been wormed lately? How runny is runny? Have you fed sardines lately?
Garden Girl
Puggy_puggy Yes to worming - wormed on Monday Yes to sardines - 2 from a tin a couple of days ago Runny - not watery - something like runny mashed potato if that makes sense (just imagine a different smell and colour) I was just thinking that it probably had something to do with both sardines and worming just this morning. she has had sardines once before which co-incided with a very farty day or so, perhaps there is a link there. She has been much better this morning - morning toilet was about 75% good and just waiting for another one to compare with...
puggy_puggy
Ahhh there you go the sardines and worming I would say are the culprits. Had an incident myself with two pups under three months that I feed sardines. Poo turned to slop for a day or so. Seems when they are young they can't handle the oiliness of the sardines. My advice would be just to feed her as normal minus the sardines.
Garden Girl
Thanks for that - I think you've hit the nail on the head.
Dogsfevr
Pumpkin is used to help runny tummies. We prefer it to rice. I have one dog that gets the squirts if he gets sardines. Worming tablets can also cause a lose tummy,We always suggest to puppy people worm early am just in case. I would also go to the chemist & get some gut relining tablets(flora max or similiar. This helps the good bacteria re establish & helps with a tummy thats slightly comprimised during this time. Embellish
I'd fast for 24 hours, then slowly introduce some chicken and rice, small meals, then gradually increasing over several days. Then slowly add your kibble. If she is unwell at all, take her to the vets.
