My 2 1/2 year old cairn has suddenly developed a doggy smell ,he previously had no smell , & within the past week he suddenly smells doggy , he is desexed , I haven't changed his food or his shampoo ,I have been putting apple cider vinigar in his rinse water to help with allergies ,but I just read on Google that this should help with dog smells - not cause them & as he lives inside with me it has become rather noticable ,any ideas guys , thanks

Could be the warmer temperatures attributing to higher amount of yeast? My dog smells kind of "yeasty" when the climate gets warmer. Rinsing with ACV helps only for 1-2 days. Important thing is not to have any sugars/high levels of carbs in his diet.

No ,haven't been able to figure it out . I've sniffed him all over it doesn't seem to come from anywhere in particular . I'm now thinking it's probably something to do with his allergies I'll ditch the tinned food , but he's a weird dog he won't eat bones ,he doesn't like anything big , he just sits there & cries & wants it cut up , eg .sausages ,I can give him a whole sausage ,he won't eat it , just cry until I cut it up , see my problem with bones , my husband says it's because he's spoilt , but I think if he's hungry he'll eat it any way it comes , he just can't seem to handle big food

He caught a bird one day & came & dropped it at my feet ,he wanted it cut up ,I don't think so , I got rid of it -- he's a funny dog

I've found the problem !!! It's the apple cider vinigar I've been putting in his bath water for allergies

that has caused it I've bathed him without it & left him a few days & the smell is gone

& yes I'll admit he is spoilt ,but I have a disability & I don't get out much so we are together constantly ,sometimes other than my husband I won't see another person for a week or two ,

I have been trying not to spoil him so much as I had to go in to hospital & he fretted badly so I have been trying to wean him off gently ,it's just as hard for me as it is for him

Great that you found the problem.

I know it can be difficult not to spoil him when you are in the circumstances you are in, but it helps to remember that you are actually not doing him any favours healthwise, and in the end he might end up miserable and sickly because of it. He is a dog, and depends on you to do what's right for him. He'll learn to eat good stuff if that's what he gets, and he'll be happier and healthier for it (eventually  Good luck.

Why are you feeding suasages anyway? Full of fat.

As for bones could be that he wants you to guard him whilst he is eating his bone. My female pug will not eat her bones unless I sit outside with her and guard her from my male pug. If I get up and move she will walk around with the bone in her mouth crying untill I sit down again. I always observe when the pugs have bones so they don't choke and so they don't fight over them.

So maybe go and get some half lambs ribs (lambs flaps) and give one to your dog and sit there with him.

Odd that the ACV would cause a Doggie smell.

Scruff Mutt Dory gets 'doggie' smelling when she has binged on dry food.

We are detoxing again....after she has been stealing dry food from her friend. LOL.

Just when I got rid of yeasty ears....they are baaaack.....

At least this time they didn't get itchy, and her anal glands are fine.

I would follow the suggestions of others....try to cut the commerical out as much as you can. Avoid food colourings...especially the red ones. PLEASE tell me you don't give him Schmako's.

And give him a good comb through. Even if he is getting bathed, a good brush helps to stimulate the skin.

Cairns are very robust little tanks ... IF he isn't given junk food... like sausages and coloured/flavoured treats... he won't eat them

providing his teeth are in good order....

Try him with chicken wings.. turkey necks, lamb flaps...all RAW and UNCUT. Ignore his cute fluffy face, his tantrums and his whining.

if you want to spoil him.. give him an extra brushing session, or some doggy massage
