inbox
Hi everyone I have a japanese spitz pup that I have been trying to lead train for the past month. Currently I am using the gentle leader easy walk and what I have noticed is that it is difficult to put it on my pup but also the main problem is when i do train him, the lead gets caught between his legs or he starts to chew on the lead. Also I don't think there has been much progress with my lead training lately as he is still pulling ahead but I think it's cause its getting annoying for him since it either gets caught between his legs and much more easy for him to chew on the lead when it isnt caught. I'm thinking of switching over to the sporn harnesses to stop those problems and wanted to know if it is recommended to. I'm worried it may irritate his body as i train him or even cause problems with pulling his hair since it is recommended for short hair dogs? Any other recommendations for a japanese spitz for harnesses? What i have been trying to do so far is making him learn to heel and stop pulling, I have been using clicker training as well where i could click n reward him when he either stops pulling and is walking beside me or gets beside me. I was wandering what other tips i could use to help my pup learn to kneel so I can start taking him out into the world instead of the driveway I have that he only uses when training. Nekhbet
why dont you just use a collar and fine lead? the dog doesnt need all this paraphenalia at his age you are creating problems. work on walking in the back yard, if he bolts ahead, turn around and start walking in the opposite directions jiggling the lead to encourage him to follow. Kavik
I agree with Nekhbet, I would try just using a collar and lead. If your pup has a tendency to slip its collar (my friend has Jap Spitzes and we have had a few Jap and German come through the dog daycare and their hair means it can be difficult to have a flat collar the right size so it can't come off) you could try a martingale. Dogsfevr
I agree with the others, you are making it harder for yourself instead of simple. All you need is a simple collar & light lead, practice & patience. It sounds like you are expecting an awful lot but have the pup very confused. There is no reason why you cant walk further than the drive way.lead training is all about experiences & teaching them as they progress through new distractions
Miranda
I also agree, it is perfectly possible to teach a dog to walk properly using a collar and lead, it just takes practice. I think martingale collars are the best design. I have a hatred of head collars and harnesses and would never use either on any dog.
inbox
Thanks for the replies so far. I wanted to know if i should be keeping the collar on him as I have yet to keep any collars on him. I have heard it may flatten his hair if kept on too much or even the chance of choking himself, but i wanted to know how i'm suppose to have any kind of identification plates for him? Would it be easier if i kept the collar on him to leash train him as well? What do other japanese spitz or long haired dog owners do? Thanks
Dogsfevr
We dont leave collars on but walking isnt negotiable.Providing you have a nice comfy collar & appropriate leash you will have your pup walking nicely with time patience & guidance, Whilst many owners like to buy fancy collars because it looks good many are very uncomfortable & the dog hate them. The hair wont flatten unless you have a clydesdale collar .if the collar is nice & light & fine you will have no issues.Just make sure you remove collar & brush the area, We dont leave collars on ours & it makes no difference to there walking.Pups are placed on to there training collars & for the first few attempts any form of walking is happily accepted & with each practise session & guidance they are walking like pros in no time. With age you will have new experiences to manage. Place pup onlead & walk confidiently & with purpose not confusion.Encourage pup with voice, treats, toys & food & make it fun.A pup that has had a horrid walking experience early on can be very hard to train out so allowing pup to be a pup not an adult & remembering there attention span is short training should be short & sweet & when they start to switch off end the session on your terms. With confidience pup will enjoy walks & understand what you want but dont expect miracles until i say 12 months & even then there is the occasional brain fart
