Antony
We are having problems getting our pup to stop jumping. When he jumps up on us, we say off, sit and then "yes" when he sits and give him a treat, but he seems to think the reward is part of the jump/sit cycle. At the puppy school, the trainer said the memory of the action was only a couple of seconds, so how do we get this out of his head? Also, we are having problems with stopping him jumping up at the kitchen work surfaces for the same reason. Any ideas welcome! Antony
Luke W
Ahhh, you've taught him a 'chained behavior".. Jump Sit Treat Clever isn't he I'm no expert... I'd just go cold turkey, no more rewards for jumping. When he approaches, issue the 'sit' cue straight away. If he sits without jumping, jackpot treat. If he jumps, "ahh", turn around, walk away. Eventually, try fading the 'sit' cue.
Erny
Generally speaking, I don't go around 'counting in seconds'. My pup is a 'jumper'. I do all the things to discourage him from it and it is when he is not doing it AND is not interested in doing it, that I'll reward him. Usually that's just with my attention.
