4 Paws
All my dogs are quite reluctant to tug and just came across this item called a tug it starter http://www.agilityclick.com/prod176.htm Anyone tried it at all?Quite keen to get them tugging as have just started one at Agility and the foxie will be doing flyball next year
leopuppy04
Yup - I've used it. Works quite well - but you need things such as chicken necks etc otherwise the dogs (well... Laffi and I found) lick it rather than tug it. mine have been tugging for quite a while before introducing this too. I haven't used this one much (present from Laffi :D ) But I do really like: http://www.cleanrun.com/index.cfm?fuseacti...mp;ParentCat=29 http://www.cleanrun.com/index.cfm?fuseacti...mp;ParentCat=29 Edited November 20, 2008 by leopuppy04
laffi
Any time LP :D My golden tugs heaps at home but she is a reluctant tugger outside. I am slowly teaching her how to tug with a tug-it so she will tug with me anywhere. I found that stuffing it with sausages or chicken necks works the best. Btw this website has a movie that teaches you how to teach a dog to tug on tug-it http://www.nosetouch.com/
4 Paws
Thankyou for your feedback, just a question, does the food come out the end they're tugging on or through the sides, totally confused. I've just ordered one so hopefully we'll get some results

I actually think it's better when the dog can bite/chew on it and not a lot of food is coming out (that's why it really matters what you put in). Otherwise the dog just starts eating and doesn't want to tug anymore. Edited November 20, 2008 by laffi

leopuppy04
Hey 4 paws - if you have weird dogs like mine (both very food motivated) they sniff it and then start tugging on the handle :p Those sorts of chunks should work really well Whcih reminds me - I should pull it out again :p Laffi - you never told me about that site

angelsun
Also remember that there are other ways for instant reward and satisfaction in both Agility and Flyball other than tugging. I am not sure why some feel this is the only reward the dogs should get? I taught agility for a long time, and never taught dogs to tug and there was a lot of dogs and their committed owners that went on to wonderful titles and wins without this practice. Just my thoughts.
ness
Your right angelsun. My older girl does agility and I reward her with treats. She will occasionally tug before we go into the ring but only if she is frustrated (more so now if I have her sister out doing something before getting her out to run). I haven't tried flyball but I know one of my friends said there food motivated BC would run faster then there toy motivated dog because they new the reward didn't come until they got back to the handler whereas the toy motivated dog was in part rewarded by retrieving the ball and was therefore slower on the return. I would just use what works for the dog and not stress if the dog won't tug (just because you believe its the in thing to do). My younger girl tugs but then she isn't as into food. Just my thoughts. There sure are other ways to reward other than tugging . Certainly not the be all and end all. There are a gazillion tools to use such as food rewards, toys of all kinds and yes, even physical praise (though I do think this CAN be limited in agility... distance work for example)... dependant on the dog, you will use your rewards acordingly in order to get the best results. whatevah
This might come in handy for flyball. Moses is a very food orientated dog, but he actually comes back for his toy rat, so maybe able to have the best of both worlds.
JulesP
Brock will not tug at all. Hates having stuff in his mouth and will not tug with me on the other end!! Poppy however I have hope for!! She likes to greet me with something in her mouth! And when training her yesterday she actually ripped the tug out of my hand and ran off with it!!! I was very excited. I managed to run through quite a few of the Susan Garrett exercises with her because she does interact with the tug. She has done no agility yet so I was really pleased. 4 Paws
OMG,I just had to report back I receive the tug it starter today and loaded it up with 2 frankfurts.Just got my girl who has never shown any interest in tuging before and after about 30 seconds actually started tugging it and really got into it.Couldn't wipe the smile off my face. After she had a really strong tug on it I thought for sure it would have a hole in it but it's fine as she really had her teeth latched on.The food comes out really good(just watch your self get covered in the squished contents) So overall a great product I'd recommend Edited November 28, 2008 by 4 Paws
