wow i've never heard beef giving dogs skin problems - interesting to know!

I've recently started my boy on a raw diet and my boy loves his beef and veal...so i'm curious about what other meats your guys get if you don't feed that? he only gets lamb in rations because it's fatty, and chicken every now and then (which isn't nutritionally complete from what i've heard), and the only place i can get kangaroo is in pet mince which i'm hesitant to feed to him...so he's been getting beef and veal mostly

eta: "started my boy on a raw diet", as opposed to started me on a raw diet

You can get Kangaroo Mince (for people) at most Woolworths. It's in a sealed pack with the regular meats. I'm converting my lot over to raw feeding and started with adding raw chicken necks for the smaller ones and kangaroo tails for the bigger ones. They also have started having raw diced meat meals with some kelp or egg or an oil added. Can anyone give me their average weekly meal plan including the size dog it's planned for? I'm going to start introducing some organ meats now. I have to say I got a seven month old pup recently with horribley dirty teeth and after only two weeks on the chicken pieces over half of her teeth are now as white as the rest of my groups. Also do people feed raw fish or are canned whole sardines acceptable?[/i]

I feed a mix of the following meats but around 80% meat, 10% bone & 10% offal:

lamb/wallaby/pig/chicken hearts

roo tails

roo meat

salmon (pieces or heads)

trout (whole)

chicken (whole not frames)

chicken giblets

rabbit (whole)

lamb necks

lamb shanks

lamb leg roast

pork ribs (with additional pork meat - as ribs too boney on their own)

lamb liver/kidneys

chicken liver

raw eggs

salmon oil capsules

I have found all of these products readily accessible. I buy in bulk when they are on sale - so my average cost per day to feed is around $2.00 (but usually around $1 - $1.50).

Feed around 2-3% of body weight daily. So my boy who is 18kgs usually gets around 400gms per day.

I am a farmer and a professional dog groomer and breeder and I feed beef liver regularly. I don't find that it upsets my dogs at all and they love it.

It is important to remember when feeding liver that it MUST be either cooked or FROZEN before it is fed to your dogs (especially if it is sheep liver). The reason for this is that sheep and sometimes cattle are hosts for the hydatid tapeworm. Many livers contain cysts which contain eggs and head sepments of the hydatid tapeworm. When ingested by the dog the eggs hatch and your dog is now the carrier of hydatids which if left untreated can be passed on to human with potentially fatal results.

See http://www.betterhealth.vic.gov.au/bhcv2/b...hydatid_disease for more information.

It is important to remember to freeze or cook your liver before feeding it to your dogs and to ensure they are treated with a specific Hydatid Tapeworm Control such as "DRONCIT" - wormers which control other tapeworms are not sufficient.

It is also interesting to note that it is ILLEGAL to feed any form of cooked or raw OFFAL in TASMANIA to dogs. See - http://www.dpiw.tas.gov.au/inter.nsf/WebPa...ART-6SA36R?open

I hope you find this informative.

I've got an 18 month old Staffordshire bull terrier,he usually weighs between 16-17kg.

At the moment his weekly meal plan is:

Monday:Chicken frame stuffed with a mixture of diced beef heart and lambs liver and kidney.

Tuesday:Kangaroo tail and diced kangaroo meat

Wednesday:Chicken frame stuffed with a mixture of diced beef heart and lambs liver and kidney.

Thursday:Kangaroo tail and diced kangaroo meat

Friday:Chicken frame stuffed with a mixture of diced beef heart and lambs liver and kidney.

Saturday:Kangaroo tail and diced kangaroo meat

Sunday:Fresh sardines or salmon frame

He also gets the occasional egg and a few strawberries/raspberries or chunk of apple here and there

I try and feed approximately 450g-600g per day,but I don't get too obsessive about weighing everything out,I just make sure he looks healthy and isn't losing or gaining too much weight.

Thanks Koolietas and Jamie. They both sound like good diets with variety, I especially like the sound of the chicken frames stuffed with meat - sounds good enough to try myself. Not really. You've both given me a really good head start, thanks again.

Curly1 I'm confused... so it needs to be frozen and you have to give your dog a special wormer if feeding liver, kidney etc?

Is Heartguard once a month ok as the wormer?

Thanks!!

And I can't find roo tails anywhere, where does everyone get them from? :D
