Mac Ongoing Health Issues

My sheltie Mac has had major health issues over the years with the most recent being serious skin issues which have resulted in him losing most of his hair and generally being pretty miserable. Turns out most of his issues were Thyroid related and we are working to stabilize that which has seen a great improvement in his health with one exception. He is constantly pooing, they are small yellowy and mucus. It is not liquid, just on the loose side and when I say constantly it almost appears he has lost control of his bowels as he has started to toilet inside, something he has never done. He is probably going about 20plus times a day, just a little bit at a time and is losing a lot of body condition as a result. He is otherwise well and eating well and seems happy enough.

He has already been to the vet and we sent away a sample which came back clear so he is on Salazopy pills twice daily which appear to have no effect at all. I have already tried Scourban and Ensol. He also regularly has complete blood panels done and there don’t appear to be any indicators there. Does anyone have any further suggestions? I am not really too sure what else I should even test for, it is not a situation I have ever been in.

Has he been seen by a Specialist for endoscope to see if he has Inflammatory Bowel disease? ( different from IBS)

Endoscope is the only way IBD can be accurately diagnosed( I have it myself so I know) and usually if IBD is confirmed a short course of steriods is prescribed to reduce the inflammation in the bowel and also dietary changes.

My Ch Bitch had this and the poops were as you describe

Unfortunately we don’t have specialists here or anywhere even remotely close. I am going back in to see the vet on Thursday and will discuss this with him.

Did your girl go constantly? What sort of diet changes as he is so limited already, we strongly suspect he is a celiac.

I would be adding pumpkin ( mashed) to his diet works wonders for bowel problems , then perhaps looks at a home prepared diet eliminating grains.

Perhaps try Thrive D? This may help, I've had a friend use it on her dog that wasnt doing too well and it really helped.

My girl went 2-3 times a day and the poops were bright yellow We lost her to the IBD even after alternative treatments.

We tried steamed turkey mince, potato, everything but nothing worked

What are you feeding? It sounds diet related. Have you tried an elimination diet at all?

DB funny you say that about pumpkin - it makes my boy (with IBD) literally poop pumpkin soup.

Over the years I have tried every elimination diet around with Mac as he has had terrible skin issues. We have finally decided that he is a celiac with thyroid issues and he has been doing really well on Nutro lamb and rice which is gluten free and basically only contains lamb and rice, no other wheat or meat proteins. He is finally stopped scratching and is starting to grow some hair back so I would be reluctant to change his diet, he has so many triggers. I am just back from the vet where we took more bloods. He tells me the med he gave me were for IB and considering if anything they made him worse he doesn’t think it is that. I guess we wait for blood results

cowanbree can you arrange a consult with a holistic vet... I have found that in many instances when complementary medicine is used as complementary medicine rather than as an alternative there can be some very good results.

my usual vet and lucindas holistic vet work together for her benefit. I dont just pop into the local health shop for some suggestions of what to give lucinda it is prescribed.
