Tokkie
My husband just bought me the Nikon D90 for Christmas!!!! He bought a kit with a Nikkor AF-S DX 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6G VR and Nikkor AF-S 55-200MM f/4-5.6G VR lens. Will these lenses be ok for a beginner like me; up until now, I always used the auto mode? I have so much to learn! I am too afraid to open the box.......... ;)
polomum
Thats heaps funny Tokkie......I just bought the D80 2nd hand on ebay and I'm scared about using it too.....those lenses sound great for a newbie......in future you'll probably look at faster (lots more expensive) lenses....so instead of being 4.5 they might be 2.8..... I'm in Strathalbyn SA.......I wanted the D90 but couldn't afford a lense to go with it so bought the D80 with an 18-200 3.5 VR lens.....Haven't had time to read the manual.....been a bit of a mad house here this week and don't want to do anything wrong Wondering if I should do a photog course somewhere...... Tokkie
Polomum, I definitely need to do a course because I know nothing ..... the problem is after buying the camera there's no money left to do a course. ;) Edit to ask: in future you'll probably look at faster (lots more expensive) lenses....so instead of being 4.5 they might be 2.8..... What does faster mean, I know it sound stupid...... ;) Edited November 8, 2008 by Tokkie

Tokkie
Thanks polomum, will have a look, I have so many things to read..... and learn. Open it open it! The lens's sound fine. Read the book and have a bash!!! I am on page 22 of the manual now, only 256 to go..... I was wondering, with the Image quality, on what setting do you normally take photos; NEF (RAW)+JPEG fine, normal or basic - NEF (RAW) - JPEG fine, normal or basic......? I know this is not a 'good' photo, still taken on auto, but with my old camera, I could never take actions photos like this. tlc
Hi I have the d80 and it is fab, you are gona love the d90 Nikons are so good, your lenses will be great for starters,I only have an 18 - 135 but it is ok so far. Set your image quality on jpeg and fine and the largest settings possible below raw. Learn all about the camera before you do any shooting on raw cause then there is more to learn as you have to edit the images after you take them also convert your raw fiels, your computer ownt do this unless you have program and know what your doing. If you have the image quality at the highest then you are always taking photos in largest possible mega pixels you can always crop and edit etc and still print out a decent pic with out losing too much quality. I am in the middle of doing a course and it has been great, I have learnt to use my camera on manual after using it on auto for so long and it does make a difference. I also a lot of the time use mine on burst mode, not sure what else to call it but it is when you take a shot and the camera keeps taking shots till you take your finger off the button, great for action shots. Good luck and have fun cant wait to see more pics. Below is one of my recent pics taken on a lovely day in the program mode so I set my exposure compensation also my white balance and my iso and the camera did the rest. Tokkie
Thanks tlc, I will stay on 'auto' for now and maybe do a course next year. Great photo!
Chloes Dad
Congrats on the cam. sounds like a great set up. the lens I would suggest will probably be the cheapest lens you will ever buy. 50mm 1.8 nikkor. AKA the nifty 50. it is a great little lens for the money (about $200) it is great fun and is a HUGE insight as to what life would be like with fast lenses ;) It is a great performer in low light too, I was using mine at a party last night after 7pm with no flash. there is no way my kit lens would have worked in that light. Aubrey
We're also in Adelaide... I bought I D80 with those 2 lenses back in May and still learning. I'm on the WEA Digital Photography Course with Tim Newbury and it is fantastic... 8 weeks with a field trip to keep you going. It is called "Using an SLR Camera" and starts mid-Feb and costs $119 - well worth every cent in my book! We're half way through and already my photos are improving (and my composition). As for faster lenses, the f/stop value (the number range) makes it faster. You have 3.5 to 6(Ish) lens at the moment, and you can get a 55-200 f/2.8 which is the best for long distance, but it will cost around $2,350. I'm looking at getting a 50mm f/1.4 or 1.8 for fixed focal and speed. Fixed range means faster and sharper images as less glass to move around. I'm also looking at the sigma 70-300 APO Macro lens for slightly longer range but primarly for the MACRO mode. Auto mode is good, but Manual is better.... take a look in the book about metering and then depending on the shot adjust the shutter speed or the f/stop to get the meter in the middle. Remember, don't go slower than 1/50 (for the 18-55) or 1/200 (for the 55-200) otherwise you'll get camera shake (unless you are on a tripod). These are just a few of the things I've learnt on the course ;)
Tokkie
Thank Aubrey and Chloes dad, I am beginning to think my husband wasted his money buying this fancy camera.... there is so many things to learn and I know nothing! ;) I read and read and read.... it's just to much to remember (expecially if you don't anderstand what your reading ), I need someone to show me. Aubrey, do I need to register for the course, and if yes, where? In addition, I don't have PS and don't have money left for CS3 or 4, will PS Elements 7 be ok? Aubrey
Aubrey, do I need to register for the course, and if yes, where? Take lots of shots on different settings..... I used flowers outside as it does good lighting and shadows. Waterfalls (plenty of those along the Torrents) are pretty good for shutter speed. Link to WEA is here http://www.wea-sa.com.au I use ACDSee Photo Manager 10 for the simpler things in life... it does a lot of what PS does but is simpler to use ;) I think the 2009 version is about $60 from here http://store.acdsee.com/store/acd/en_US/Di...uctID.106893200 It will happily open the NEF files and allows you to crop, lighten, unsharpen mask and change to jpeg for you to email around.... however stick to RAW files for your camera, then open them in this and save to TIFF (Loss-less format). Let me know if you need any other assistance Andrew

A friend of mine has done both and he said the SLR one was the better one. You'll learn everything about the camera and taking shots, without spending time on Post Processing (Photoshop etc.).
