greytdog
Well, we've decided that the laundry just isn't big enough to store all of Bianca's dry food and dog bikkies, so I'm looking for some suitable bins. I'd like them to be bug proof and preferably airtight, so I can put them on the back verandah. I'm not sure what size bags of dry they are, but they're pretty large, and the bikkies are 2x2s, which come in a huge box. Any suggestions anyone? I'm southeast of Melbourne. Guest PixieOfWrath
I'm using metal rubbish bins from Bunnings. $40 each but the only thing the blasted wild rats can't chew through ETA they probably wouldn't class as airtight? But I go through a bag in 2wks so I don't need to worry about the food spoiling, as much as it feeding the entire country's wild rodent population Edited November 7, 2008 by PixieOfWrath
greytdog
I might even get one to put her coats/leads/collars/muzzles/yada yada yada in. Damn dog has more bling than I do.
Guest PixieOfWrath
I use plastic tubs from the Warehouse for their paraphernalia - for some reason the wild rats aren't interested in chewing through containers to steal them! They're cheap, the lids clip on, and they're transparent (most of them) so I can see what's in there.
Clyde
I have just bought an air tight pet food bin. I've already ordered another as Im so pleased with it. Could your local pet barn type place order some in for you? I've bought a Medium and it holds 15kg of food. It's called a Rubbermaid Scoop n' Store Pet Food Storage. It comes with a large scoop and was quite cheap too. Very neutral bluey-grey colour.
poodlefan
I don't know how much food you want to store but you could try sourcing old olive barrels - they are very sturdy plastic, with a big screw lid. Your local rural supplier might be a place to look - that's where horse folk go for storage bins.

Might have to try that...it wouldn't need to hold more than 15kg. Sounds like just the thing. I wonder if Big W or KMart sell them? ETA to add...thanks everyone Edited November 7, 2008 by greytdog

Rysup
I use the freebies you get with dog food that I have accumulated over the years. Recently Advance were giving out collapsible ones, I use them in the kitchen, and years ago I got some with the now defunct breeders formula from Pedigree. anniek
I have a big green wheelie bin that I use to keep spare bags of food for foster carers. I line it with a huge thick plastic bag, then put the smaller bags inside. It's handy, because I can keep it outside and of course wheel it to move it if I need to annieK

laneka
Using the Bunning metal bins here too. Rats chewed through the heavy duty plastic one. Also have food grade 44 gallon drums with lids for longer storage . All beasty proof.
Sankari
I have 12 storage bins which were originally used for olives. Only 1 is for my dog the rest are for storing rabbit food, hay and woodshavings in. I got mine from a local sunday market. They are really good plastic and airtight. Have screwtop lids. I am a short person so dont have those huge ones. The dog food one holds 20kg at a time. Maybe try a market or something?? I know what you mean about your dog having more stuff than you, My 3yr old Golden Retriever has toys everywhere, t-shirts, collars, leads etc.
*Avanti*
Thanks for the link BigDaz. I've been looking for dry food containers to store grains. I'd been holding back on plastic ones (because rodents can chew them) and the galvo bins I'd found would still let moths in. That place is just down the road from me . I picked up one of these, plus a lid for under $20.Metal Container (Scroll all the way down to the last item)
greytdog
Thanks for all the suggestions. I bought one of those rubbermaid ones, but I haven't tried it yet. I don't think it's airtight, but that doesn't really matter unless insects can get in. I'll think of something else for the bikkies and gear tho. One thing I forgot to mention is that it had to be easy for my rather frail mother to open as she's the one that feeds Bianca (can't stand waiting until I get home, as has doggy eyes staring at her from 4pm onwards LOL). Somehow, I think the kibble will end up being back in the laundry pretty quickly as I don't see Mum going out to the back verandah to get it.
