raz Posted November 6, 2008 Share Posted November 6, 2008 A friend of mine took her best mate to the vet yesterday and she's been told her dog will need surgery on her cruciate ligament. Understandably friend is pretty distraught. Does anyone have a recommendation for a good specialist vet? Friend is prepared to travel. She's also worried about the rehab so if anyone has gone through this surgery and can share their experiences I'll pass it on. Thanks in advance. After the cruciate repair we went back for a couple of trigger point therapy sessions and good as new! He is at Gladesville Vet, they have a web site and a bio on him there. Hi Raz, Totally agree with Clyde. He and his team have been my vets for many years and I cannot recommend his practice highly enough. My first schnauzer had both cruciates done by Max and was as sound as a bell after the recovery period. Rehab is a pain if you are working full time. My dog was kennel rested (my inside laundry, and away from other dog) for about a month after each surgery and leash walked out to the yard for toileting. Clyde Posted November 7, 2008 Share Posted November 7, 2008 No need to stress Rehab is a bit of a hassle, confinement initially and teeny daily walks building up to an acceptable level, going back to the vets every week. I can't remember the exact percentage, but it's high, of dogs who end up doing the second. My advice is to start on some sort of glucosamine straight away too. There could also be a patella issue in which case that should be fixed too. Max is wonderful. Awesome vet who has all the answers. In all the years I've been going there I've not ever doubted his opinion, nor needed to. He is the only vet I will go to if my pets have something a little more complex to be dealt with. I used to nurse there too so know that behind the scenes is so top notch aswell. I'm not affiliated with them anymore at all, but I've not ever found a better veterinary clinic. Tell your friend to go see Max for a discussion and if it feels right for her to go ahead with it. IMO it needs to 'feel right' in order for you to use that vet. He specialises in this and hip replacement ops. Have a look at their website. You can also google/yahoo his name and you will see that he publishes and is well respected around the world.
