Harry's At The Vet

I just posted this in the greyhound thread, and thought I'd try here as well.

Hi,

Just wanted to pick your collective brains!

We've taken Harry to the vet this morning as he's not well. When I got up, he wasn't his normal bouncy self. He wanted to go straight outside, which is not normal, as usually I have to prise him off his bed. He did a poo and came back in, but wasn't comfortable. He was panting, shivering, whimpering and arching his back. We took him to the vet, and he's there now having blood tests and possibly x-rays. He seems to have pain in his abdomen, or just forward of it. He has no temperature and his heart is normal. We are hoping it's nothing serious, but has anyone experienced this?

The vet rang and said his bloods are good, a small amount of blood in his urine, and now they're going to do x-rays. Keeping my fingers crossed that it won't be a major illness. With the bloods being good, t least that's a hopeful sign.

Vet called. Spleen has been removed and was twisted. It went down in size when they removed the blood flow, but still was about twice the size of normal. He's recovering and if he doesn't stress to much will stay in overnight on fluids. If he stresses, which is normal for him, he may come home tonight. No sign of cancer anywhere, but they are keeping a piece if we want to do a biopsy later if something else comes up. So far so good!

Harry is doing really well. He came home on Thursday, but we had to take him back to stay at the vet's overnight as he was stressing too much. Would not lie down and just stood panting for two hours. He had already been given lot's of painkillers, so the vet wanted him back in overnight on a drip and to give him a shot of valium.

He came home Friday, and has improved heaps. This morning he got all excited and ate his breakfast well. He's getting back to being the looney Harry that we are used to. Still not quite as mad a usual, but getting there.

If it was twisted, its similar to GDV, exept only the spleen twists. (splenic Torsion)

He is a lucky boy to come throught the surgery & recovery, I would be keeping him very confined & tiny meals through the day.

Hope Harry has a smooth recovery & is back to normal soon.

I'd never heard of the spleen twisting, and apparently it is not very common for it to happen. I thought it might have been bloat, and was really worried, but his abdomen wasn't distended.

The vet said they could untwist it and leave it there, but the chance is that it could happen again, as with GDV. Considering the large size of it, and the fact that it didn't reduce in size to a normal size, removal was the best option.

I can't believe how well he is considering what he's just gone through. He's certainly going to be rested and fed carefully for a while. He's much brighter and wanted to do zoomies this morning, but I called him to me and gave him a cuddle to distract him. I spoke to DH, and he's sleeping on his bed inside and taking it easy.

Flash'smum, I would be crating/penning Harry, its a huge surgery and you need to be careful of post surgical complications.

I would ONLY be taking him out for a little toilet toddle on lead, and crated 24/7 for at least a week.
