She has a short coat that sheds alot and i was wondering what the best way to keep this in check is? i have tried my cat's slicker brush - am I correct in thinking this is the one with lots of fine metal prongy things? But it does not grab the hairs. What brush would be best? What about running a rubber gloved hand over her? Any tips? pie Posted November 5, 2008 Share Posted November 5, 2008 I have a Tenterfield Terrier which has a short smooth single coat, I imagine it's be similar to a smooth FT? I brush him about twice a week which keeps the shedding down. The pin type brushes don't work on him, the ones that do work have rubber bits, much like a Kong zoom groom. I have a handled brush at the moment which has rubber 'cones' on it and it is very effective. They grip the dead hairs and remove them easily. Garden Girl Posted November 5, 2008 Share Posted November 5, 2008 I have border terriers who have a double coat that we are meant to hand strip and yesterday got a Mars Coat King brush (20 teeth) - its absolutely fantastic and you can get them in different sizes for different coats. I went to two places, the second had two rubber choices (I didn't see the zoom groom in the grooming section where i was).. I was choosing between the masterpet moulting brush and the masterpet turbo brush . The turbo brush looks like the zoom groom, and has very soft silicon rubber. The moulting brush had rubber cones that are smaller and not so flexible. You can see both here http://www.masterpet.com/new-zealand/produ...ooming-brushes/ I bought the medium dogs moulting brush - spent ages deciding whether she was a small dog or a medium dog!! i got the medium brush. It works ok, obviously loosens the hair, but I could still pull heaps out by hand after I had groomed her so am doubting the brushes ability really. It also seemed to loosen hair but leave it on the dog - I could tell because the white hairs were free but trapped on her tan patches :-) . So I then had to wipe them off with my hand. Is this where I would use a soft brush afterwards? The small turbo brush has very soft cones, the next size up are bigger cones that are not as flexible. Would you think a Foxy would need a 'small dog brush'? Sorry to seem like a complete gumby, I just don't want to throw good money after bad! I do have one of those grooming mit type things, but it is so big and quite inflexible and she does not like it and it doesn't work well at all. Perhaps I need to find the zoom groom. JME the mars brush looks great, if a bit scary! LOL thanks for the link - by the time i have bought all these other brushes I might as well have invested in one! They look quite 'hard' for a single coat though?!?! Jed - did you mean the red brush? they all look good, I didn't see any of them in City Farmers.. pie Posted November 6, 2008 Share Posted November 6, 2008 I use the rubbery brush (outside ) and it loosens the hairs, and I brush them off with my hand. greytdog Posted November 9, 2008 Share Posted November 9, 2008 On the same website, but under "Grooming Combs", they have a "Shape N Shed". I used one of these on Bianca during the first moult of her "outside kennel coat", the first spring I had her. It worked fantastically. You don't need to use a lot of pressure - obviously you wouldn't on a grey due to their thin skin anyway, so it won't hurt a foxie - and they really do a good job on the hair. Bianca never grew a long coat the following winter as she spends nearly all day inside, and is coated when cold, so I won't have nearly as much hair to deal with this year. I also use a rubber pimply brush which works OK on her, and she loves the feeling of it. I bought mine for $2 at the cheap shop. An old hacksaw blade does the same job as the Shape N Shed, but these combs have a handle which makes using them a bit easier. Just start gently with them.
