sabertooth
I have been told to feed my puppy rice to make it cheaper to feed her, as she is a very big eater, and will be a very big dog. so is rice ok to feed her with her meat or should i be using something else. poocow
Rice like all grains, is just a filler. Bulk up her meals with vegies. Or feed a good quality dry food.
Dame Aussie
Who told you that? I completely disagree. I wouldn't be feeding any dog rice as a main part of their diet. They don't digest grains well and there is no real nutritional value there. You would be better off feeding a middle range dry food, raw or a mix of both. Raw can actually be quite cheap even for a big dog as you can feed them things like hearts, shanks, necks etc and can get these at supermarkets very cheap. There's nothing wrong with giving the dog a bit of rice or pasta but only when they have an upset stomach and need something really bland.
Gretel
When you buy a pup of a big breed the cost of feeding definitely needs looking at. You are already concerned about her movement so I wouldn't be looking at cutting corners in the feeding department. What has her breeder recommended you feed? persephone
I also wouldn't suggest doing this Just because she's big doesn't mean she should miss out on 'real' food. Correct feeding is even MORE important for a bigger pup.
poodlefan
What are you feeding her now? Rice and meat as a diet would be highly calcium deficient.. a really bad idea for any pup but a disaster for a large breed one.

I am feeding her supercoat dry biscuits for breaky and a mix of mince, chicken loaf, yoguhrt and rice for dinner with some meat off cuts in between, sometimes. Cavandra
Rice is of no nutritional value to a dog, it is something you feed very occassionally, and brown is always better than white too. High volumes of such foods build up & usually cause Canine Candida
Staffyluv
I agree with everyone else -lose the rice and add some veges.

Bully
i am starting to doubt my breeder! I was thinking the same thing By feeding a cheap, unbalanced diet to a pup just to save $$$$ will only cost you more in vet bills. By feeding a well balanced good diet you will be setting up your puppy for a healthy life and saving on vet bills. Get a hold of the book "Grow Your Pup With Bones" by Dr Ian Billinghurst. Your local library may have it. If you are feeding extra meat and veg don't forget to feed some bones as well. Bones are a good source of calcium. Meat has no calcium. Meat contains phosphorous which needs to be balanced with calcium. What breed is your puppy and how old?

puggy_puggy
Lose the rice and add some veggies and bones. Grains are not a natural part of a dogs diet and can often cause skin problems. Do a search for BARF or RAW Feeding diets.
