Sloppy Green Poo.

Hi all.

Have had a call from a client who is a bit concerned about her dog who poo'd a sloppy (ie holding form, but very loose) green poo this morning - so bad that it caused her to gag and she had to get her husband to clean it up. Dog is otherwise normal - eating well; lively; etc. To the client's knowledge her dog hasn't eaten anything different to the norm and was originally concerned about parvo.

My reply to her was such that if the dog is normally active and happy; drinking and eating normally, then I wouldn't be too concerned and wouldn't think it would be parvo related. But just to watch for further stools to check that they are returning to normal and that her dog's demeanor remains as it usually is.

Any other thoughts? I think this is a case of don't panic and just keep dog under observation for a bit.

From that desciption I would be straight off the the Vet, with the poop in a plastic container/bag so that the Vet could do an faecal analysis and faecal float.

Very reminiscent of when our Maggie started having bowel issues and was later diagnosed with severe Inflammatory Bowel Disease.

With me having OBD now I have been told any massive change in colour of motions or texture to get a sample to GP asap who will then ring Specialist.

Orbit gets foul runny green/dark poo from eating ox heart. He also had it once when he found some possum intestines and decided to try them as a meal.

If it's not a regular occurance and the dog is otherwise well, I wouldn't be too concerned at this stage. Do the usual 24 hour fast and then introduce something bland. If its not clearing up after this then off to the vet.

Thanks Stormie. Aside from the bland diet for a day or two (will pass that info on as well), that's pretty much what I've suggested. I don't think there is cause for alarm just at this stage.

Cheers, and thanks guys for the contributions.

OK I'll come clean here. It was Pancake and Erny was helping me out because I didnt want to worry my breeder. Thankyou so much, Erny. You're a legend.

All seems well. I dont know what on earth caused the problem. Diet is always the same and poos are always little nuggets. She never poos in her pen overnight. This thing was so stinky I was ready to vomit, and it was definitely a bottle green colour.

Greenies can sometimes do interesting things to a dogs system as well - my boys had a giant sized one each the other week...green yoghurt type poo was the surprise of the day

But they often get nasty dark/greenish poos after eating too much offal/entrail type stuff/too many eggs etc

Ohhhh might have been an egg. Thanks Kitkat. She had one on saturday morning. Certainly human grade and she has them once a week - this one just broke when I cracked it so couldnt use it to make Mr R a poached egg. Problem solved, I think. Ta muchly.
