ReneeH Posted October 29, 2008 Share Posted October 29, 2008 Help me. I have a staffy pup who loves to dig in the vegie patch. Is there anything that will keep her out (besides fencing it off). WreckitWhippet Posted October 29, 2008 Share Posted October 29, 2008 Fence it off but you will need some decent fencing to keep the pup out as Staffords are very head strong and will force their way in. You can use a ping string around the garden Give the pup it's own space, in a sandpit or build a sandbox of some kind. Make sure there are fun things to do in there, bury toys or a bone and encourage the pup to dig there. VJB Posted October 29, 2008 Share Posted October 29, 2008 Sand pit for dogs are great. Just get one of those kids clams and fill with river sand from Bunnings. Hide treats and toys and make lots of exciting noise when teaching to dig in this place. While at Bunnings, have a look around at what you can purchase to protect your garden beds. Something like chainlink or chainmesh is about $80 a roll but definately worth the money. I think fencing will help but definately give the pup a place to dig. When Lomani went through a digging stage I would put a bit of poo in each hole she dug and she wouldn't go back to the same spot. Eventually we had enough poo filled holes around the yard that there was nowhere safe for her to dig and she gave up. Can't remember the last time I needed to do it - which is a pain cos it was easier when I didn't have to dig a hole to put the poop in myself LOL. The poop trick worked with our 2 cavaliers but when our boxer pup started digging holes in the lawn we tried the same thing and she just ate the poop in one gulp and kept digging at that spot... I still gag thinking about it. We are still struggling to stop her digging and we don't think she's getting bored as someone is usually always home with her so we are looking into a special digging patch for her. But if you can fence off your garden use something nice and sturdy... otherwise it will cost you more having to replace something flimsy and easy to get through. Rottifan Posted November 1, 2008 Share Posted November 1, 2008 Good luck - I created a digging corner of my yard which I didnt mind being destroyed and I only let my boy near the vegie patch when I was in the viccinity to watch and correct his behaviour at the time of his digging. It took a little while but I made the appropriate digging area irristable and went and played with him so eventually it worked. I would go to the vegie patch, correct him verbally then take him strictly straight over to the play corner I had created for him and I switch to fun happy mum encouraging him to find his buried toys and snacks and we havent looked back!
