stacyk Posted October 19, 2008 Share Posted October 19, 2008 My 4mth puppy was vaccinated yesterday with her 2nd C5 vaccintation (1st was given by breeder and no complications advised). She has been very subdued and sleepy since and did not eat her dinner or breakfast. I have just noticed her neck and jowels are extremely swollen and painful to touch. Her breathing seems fine and there is no wheezing or difficulty, however she does seem a little hot. Has anyone seen a reaction like this after vaccinating? Any swelling on face/throat should not be just left go find someone who will take a good look at the dog. Our pup got a lump on her neck after one of her shots and i was onto the vet straight away for just that. If the throat seems swollen I woud get to the vet asap. stacyk Posted October 20, 2008 Author Share Posted October 20, 2008 Thanks for everyone's concern. The vet has put her on anti-inflammatories and antibiotics. Her swelling has decreased dramatically only a little lumpy in her gland areas now. She is still not her merry self but is drinking and eating select 'yummy' foods and is being monitored closely. dogbesotted Posted October 20, 2008 Share Posted October 20, 2008 just a suggestion... there is a procedure for reporting suspected reactions to vaccinations and other medications.. the APVMA.... all reactions should be reported there and if your vet refuses do it yourself. stacyk Posted October 29, 2008 Author Share Posted October 29, 2008 Thought I should add an update to my little girls condition. She is back to the vets again tonight for another follow up visit. After her swelling went down her entire face/head blistered and most her hair fell out (head only). She was given antihistamines (already on antibiotics) and also washed every 3 days in malaseb encase of bacteria etc... (she is also treated with advocate) Her 'wounds' are no longer weepy but still very red and angry looking. Hopefully I start getting some answers tonight otherwise I will ask for a specialist refferal. Wish I knew if the vaccine caused this or if there was another factor. My vet seems to think it is not a food allergy or similar as her whole body is not affected. Also the area where the needle went in also had a reaction aswell. The only good thing is it is not spreading to any other areas. Praying for a quick recovery, I really do hate to see my little girl this way. Thanks KJ how was your puppy treated and how long did it take for her to recover? I mentioned this to my vet this morning. After last nights consult he decided it would be best to take her today for a GA so he could take a biopsy and do further testing. So at this stage I am waiting for an update from my vet. Thanks Aussie3 I hope it clears up soon too! Edited to add: she does have a high temperature despite still being her perky self (though grumbling a bit more then normal, she is a talker) and has a slight oder so there is an infection despite antibiotics. I was going to post to say James had a vaccination reaction where his whole face swelled up... we rushed him to the vet who gave him an antihistamine shot... but we didn't have any of the issues you have had after the swelling went down... KJ Posted October 30, 2008 Share Posted October 30, 2008 The treatment for puppy strangles (also known as juvenile cellulitis) is cortisone and antibiotics, my puppy has taken about 2 months to recover and finally be free from medication.
