Desensitise To Bee Stings

My dog was stung by a bee last Friday and had quite a severe reaction. I was told by someone (not a vet) that you can desensitise dogs via series of injections to bee stings. This is not something I have heard of before so was wondering if anyone else has heard of it or had it done??

I have been desensitised against bees myself. I've seen an older thread on dogs being desensitised against pollens etc. So I'm sure you can get it done. You can call a veterinary specialist centre and find out.

Otherwise, you can remove all plants that attract bees and carry phenergan (or similar) to give in case of an emergency. Check the dose and type of antihistamine with your vet. I know the older type antihistamines work better in dogs compared to the newer non-drowsy types. I may be wrong.

I'm not sure where your dogs stay but you can keep him inside in spring time when there are more bees.

I have 2 dogs highly allergic to bees & have injections from the vet i take every where.

I wouldnt put the dogs through the desensitizing just prefer to be more aware & ensure there are no plants which attract.

Thanks for the replies! I will speak to the vet about what to do with regard to the next possible bee sting, it was fortunate I was home at the time and able to rush her to the vet. One thing though she has been avoiding the bush the bees were gathered on since then!
