Blue Fox 001
A client of mine who's Shih X has constantly stained paws from licking, you know the endless cycle of irritation, licking, irritation, rang tonight to book in to have her clipped off before she goes to the vet next week. She saw something on TV, Dr Harry I think, about something called Pink Paw and she is taking the dog to the vet to have this investigated. The vet has asked her to fast the dog eg. no breakfast on the morning but she doesn't know why. Does this make sense to anyone? Can you tell me what Pink Paw is? persephone
never heard of 'pink paw'...... If it is the fur stained in between toes etc.. it is possibly an allergic reaction, making itches, which then get chewed.... Also- AFAIK,some dogs with very hairy feet get irritation between their toes, when sweat/ dampness and sand etc gather there :)They lick to clean/soothe it. Licking CAN also become obsessive... the dog is a bit anxious? Lick, Lick. Bored? Lick , Lick... Hopefully ,allergy tests can be done to rule that out, or feet can be checked for an elusive flea ..it only takes one bite! Blue Fox 001
Is there an actual condition called Pink Paw though. She seemed to think it is an infection which has now travelled to the other paw. Too me it looks like irritation (for what ever reason) which has now become the bored, itchy, lick cycle you mention persephone. It is not between her toes, more on the top of the paw. persephone
Good- I see rappie is reading It could well be a transferrence of bacteria from one to t'other, I guess... But not sure why he wants to fast the dog?
Nekhbet
depending on what else is going on with the dog he could be wanting to do a blood test and needs fasting levels to see glucose. Does the dog have other problems like bad fur quality, changes to drinking, age, swelling etc or is already on things like Cortisone tablets? Rappie
I'm here, I flit in and out of threads and sometimes I wander off in the middle of things, lol. Persephone's post is basically along my train of thought. I've not heard of any condition referred to specifically as "pink paw" but saliva staining (combined with a yeast infection) can certainly give the hair on the feet a distinctive pink - brown colour. Allergies or injury or anything that causes irritation to the interdigital skin can trigger licking - for investigation, soothing, cleaning etc. It can also become a habit, or a way of expressing anxiety. There is the potential for it to spread between feet, but commonly it is a reflection of the fact that the same thing is affecting more than one foot. The fasting, I would guess is in case blood tests (for allergies or otherwise) are to be taken, fat in the serum can interfere with some assays and this is more of a concern after eating. Blue Fox 001
Thanks everyone for your replies. This dog comes to me fairly regularly so I will suss her out when she drops her back in next time after the vet and see what the verdict was. I think it is probably irritation (maybe yeast related). She is only a quite young dog (4yrs) and it has always been on her right paw but apparently in the past 6 weeks or so it is now her left as well that she is licking. Anyway thanks again.
