Alison
I am thinking of adding these to my dogs diet, have been told that they can be good for the hair and skin. Can you give too much Iron, Zink, Copper or Cobalt? ORGANIC IRON & TRACE MINERAL TABLETS FOR DOGS & GREYHOUNDS ACTIVE INGREDIENTS: Each tablet contains: Iron 39mg, Zinc 33mg, Copper 1.2mg and Cobalt 1.5mg (as Proteinates) DESCRIPTION: Organic Iron & Trace Mineral Tablets are a source of iron and minerals for greyhounds and dogs of all ages to supplement diets that may be deficient. Organic Iron & Trace Mineral Tablets contain iron, copper and cobalt to maximise a greyhounds potential to produce essential blood elements. The inclusion of zinc helps with bone, tendon and ligament development. DIRECTIONS FOR USE: One tablet per 30 kg bodyweight daily. SPECIAL FEATURES: Organic Iron & Trace Mineral Tablets have been formulated by veterinarians to boost the haemoglobin content of the blood, making it possible to improve a greyhound's performance to its genetic limit. The tablets have been designed to increase stamina in the racing greyhound. Organic Iron & Trace Mineral Tablets contain iron, copper and cobalt which all work together to maintain normal metabolism, assist in bone development and help in the formation of red blood cells. The addition of zinc provides an absorbable formula crucial to good ligament and tendon formation, and is required for normal bone and cartilage development. Zinc also optimises the removal of carbon dioxide from the red blood cells, thus enhancing racing performance and general well being. Organic Iron & Trace Mineral Tablets contain only Mineral Proteinates, (prepared under a patented process) which have a far greater absorption from the small intestine than minerals formulated in a chemical form. Mineral Proteinates are true Chelates which closely resemble the naturally occurring minerals found in milk, fruit and vegetables, which in turn provide optimal absorption. cashew
Personally I steer clear of Iron if I am already adding organ parts into the raw diet. Trace minerals are good for the skin in general...but not too sure if we need to add that to our dog's diet. On a sidenote, I donate blood regularly and often receive free iron tablets from the bloodbank. I reject taking iron pills as they give me severe constipation and black poo! So I guess I am not suited for an OD of iron
puggy_puggy
If your dog is eating a good raw diet then it should be already getting enough iron and trace minerals. I say save your money and don't use them. Probably the only time that I would use something like that is if blood tests had shown that my dog was low in iron or other trace minerals. Alison
Thanks, i couldn't see how they would help either. What about tissue salts? I believe these can be quite beneficial...
sas
If it's a product designed specifically for dogs then you'd be pretty safe to give it a trial run, it's when you're trying human stuff you need to be a tad bit more careful. I'd feel more comfortable trying something that was created for Greyhounds (and dogs in general) as they tend to put a fair bit of research into their products. I think you'd find these minerals are in low levels, if you are concerned pop onto a Greyhound forum, there's a few Australian ones around with helpful members happy to answer questions. Of course you could always contact the makers
