Before I used normal human grade chicken mince that I cooked and gave to my 3 month old cavalier puppy. I cooked the pet chicken mince and started giving it to her tonight. Bones should never be cooked!!!!! So stop cooking it now! Your dog will eat it raw. Dogs should be fed raw food. Raw mince, raw veggies, raw meat, raw fish ( I think you get my point) If you are wanting to feed a raw diet or even a partially raw diet please please do some reading of books on BARF and RAW diets as a lot of mistakes can be made if you just chuck your dog a bit of this and a bit of that. You actually have to know what you are doing if you are going to feed a totally natural diet. ie in what to feed, how to feed and how much to feed. What other raw food is ok to give? I don't think I will just feed raw but a combination of raw and dry. I tried chicken necks but she tried swallowing it whole. puggy_puggy Posted October 7, 2008 Share Posted October 7, 2008 If you handle the meat properly, like you would any meat you were to consume yourself, salmonella poisoning should not be a factor. Get the dog mince home, divide it up into portions, freeze it, defrost in in the fridge on the day you wish to feed it. Cut the chicken necks up into pieces that are a bit smaller then half your index finger. I do this even for my adult pugs and they still have a few chews on each piece before swollowing. You really should get yourself a few books on the subject of BARF/RAW feeding. As I said before you actually have to understand the principle behind raw feeding before you actuall start doing so. As Puggy Puggy said, you need to do a little more research Have a think about the bones that dogs bury and then dig up weeks or months later. Do you think salmonella is going to be an issue? I have given my dogs chicken carcasses many times that don't smell fresh at all (bought that way but you don't know until you get them home) - have never had a problem. Dogs have a much shorter digestive tract than humans so can cope with the disgusting things that they eat They also lick their bums Read some books on raw feeding as you need to balance the diet. I follow Dr Ian Billinghust (Aussie Vet) and his books "Give Your Dog A Bone", "Grow Your Pups With Bone" and the "BARF Diet". Your local library might have the books or you can order them from his website or a good on-line book seller or even your local book store. Good Luck. Your puppy will thank you for a healthy raw diet.
