Nicole...
Just wondering if anyone knows what materials/processes/chemicals/etc are involved in making rawhides and pigs ears. Lomani has always been prone to itching but over time we have worked out a lot of the causes (predominantly cereals) and have her largely under control. We worked out a while ago that pigs ears were a problem and haven't given them to her for some time. She is fine with the plain white coloured rawhides, but this week we gave her one that is a pinky browny colour and she is itching like crazy again. There have been no other changes to her diet, so I am pretty sure it must be that one, so was just wondering if anyone has any idea how they make these things and what component she might be reacting to. Thanks in advance!
puggy_puggy
I wouldn't feed either as both are full of fat and preservatives and can cause dogs to choke when they get soft. Why not give her a raw meaty bone instead? I found this...... http://www.urbananimal.net/pdf/issue9/3pet_treats.pdf '''Rawhides have little or no nutritional value except some are high in fat and kilojoules and many have excessive amounts of sugar, salt, questionable preservatives or ‘flavourings’. In addition, corn, wheat and soy flours which are used as filler in ground rawhide formed bones are three of the biggest culprits in food allergies'''
chuckie500
I think the white ones get bleached to get that white. I wouldn't want to eat bleach either. I don't use them any more. someone told me they have a high salt content too.
Nicole...
Ahhhhh I'd be guessing it's either the preservatives or the flours you described puggy_puggy. Thanks for that. Lomani does get lots of raw meaty bones but she gets through them much faster than a rawhide so we generally give them to her to keep her amused while we are at work. Probably won't though after that bit of information!!!! :D
laneka
I have a 9.5 year old Rottweiler who cannot tolerate nice raw meaty bones. He gets very gassy and vomits a lot after eating them. He gets a pigs ear when the others have a bone. Anyone got any better suggestions?

Sheridan
On one US email list I'm on it was mentioned that the cheapo rawhide chews from overseas get preserved in formaldehyde. Could be apocryphal but given the dog food scare from China, I wouldn't be feeding them.
whitka
What about pig trotters that you get from the supermarket? I've been giving these to Toby, I cant give him bones because he gets very aggersive. Edited October 2, 2008 by whitka

Same process and chemicals would be used to dry them as the pigs ears and raw hides.

This has only happened for the last year and a half. I guess it is just him getting old. He cannot tolerate some dry foods or fat. I feed him EP Holistic and lean beef. He gets 2x4 dog bikkies. So as a treat he gets pigs ears.
