Staycalm
I know I've seen posts about this but can't track it. Alfie has been licking at his leg for a few days to a week and I see it has become a little inflamed and raw. What can I do to help this clear up? Keep distracting him when he's licking? Winterpaws
It's hard to say aithout knowing what the problem is. Charlie did that and when we parted his hair (he has a really thick coat) I found a really big pustule which I squeezed all the gunk out of and he stopped. There are so many reasons why they lick - could it be a hot spot?

I've looked to see if there might be a grass seed or something but it just seems to be sore on the surface. What are hot spots again?
puggy_puggy
To stop him licking he needs and elizabethan collar so he can't get to it. You can get them at any vets. If you don't stop him licking he will continue to irritate the area. Bath the spot in warm salty water and dry it then get some Curash Powder, if it's really wet and yucky, or Curash ointment, if it doesn't need drying out that much. Curash is used for nappy rash and can be bought at supermarkets and chemists. If it doesn't seem to be healing in the next few days go to the vets. Jed
If you are satisfied it doesn' t need to be seen by a vet, and you simply want to stop him licking, put Vicks vapourub on it. It wont hurt him, but the smell will stop him licking. Renew as necessary.

The curash sounds like it could help.
laneka
Try painting anti nail biting stuff around the sore. Not on it but around it. It will taste bitter when licked.
Nekhbet
he needs an elizabethan collar then some betadine solution. The iodine solution dries it faster. If he has long hair clip around it and extend the margin of iodine by at least half a centimeter around the wound edge to prevent it getting larger. Don't remove the collar until you see it has started healing properly and you supervise him with it off. Hotspots are basically superficial bacterial skin infections that become hot, irritated and moist. They are usually circular shaped hence being called a hot spot. The longer your dog licks the more they push infection into the deeper tissue layers so as soon as you see licking put a bucket collar on the dogs head. Crisovar
There is always the possibility that he is creating the irritation from compulsive licking. Does he suffer separation anxiety or is he is anxious about anything?
