Leevers Posted September 24, 2008 Share Posted September 24, 2008 Not sure where to type this, but I'm chasing pro's and con's on Daschunds, and whether female dogs bleed as my partner seems to think this is the case. With that said, I've only owned female dogs and never known this to be the case at all! Any clarification? I work 8 hours a day and my partner is working 10 hours a day. When we find the right Daschund pup I'll be taking 4 weeks off of work to stay with her/him in order to get to know each other. The dog will sleep with us, travel with us, and spend most of it's time with us. There will be time I'll be able to take the dog to work with me if I'm working in the one place for the day. Question: 1. Prices seem to vary from $400 to $1200 not sure why other than color? 2. Who breeds them in Perth? finding Daschund pups are near on impossible in Perth for some reason? 3. Does anyone have any advice on these dogs as I've done alot of research, but am willing to learn from owners experiance? Crisovar Posted September 24, 2008 Share Posted September 24, 2008 If you get a female pup and you do not have it desexed, then YES, it will have regular heat cycles and bleed, the cycles last for approx 3 weeks, every 6 months approx. All breeders set their prices differently, I have no idea what the current average price for a Miniature Dachshund is, you will need to check out the Dogzonline Breeders pages Breed Pages and see if you can find a Breeder near you. When selecting a puppy it is the Health and Temperament of the pup that you consider before the price, you will hopefully have this new puppy for many years to come, so you do your research and choose your breeder wisely. Also be careful you want to aim for health tested parents who are of a healthy shape and back length, and the breeder has properly socialised the pups to things - then there is microchip, worming, vet check, vaccination and pedigree papers (always demand to have pedigree papers provided with your puppy). $400 seems a little cheap to me. remember too Dachys are BARKY little dogs, I mean very barky if untrained or bored. They are sweet little dogs but their original jobs was to go down holes and pull out badgers so they can be a little dominant and stubborn at times (but geeze they are cute ) a good breeder should also give you an exercise regime to help prevent spinal/leg problems and make sure you get a very good diet. biggest thing to remember - a fat dachshund is a suffering dachshund. keep him or her as lean as possible and dont let people berate you 'oh your dog is too thin' your dog has a unique shape that is not in any way built to handle chubby. Thin dogs live longer, are active for longer and if you feed a controlled healthy diet less instances of pancreatitis, arthritis, skin problems, tooth infections and ear infections. sausy.dog Posted September 24, 2008 Share Posted September 24, 2008 (edited) In our state the current average price for a miniture is around the $1000 mark and a registered standard is around $800 but I am not sure if all states are the same. $400 would be from a BYB. I would think you will pay at least $700 from a registered breeder. We have a standard who is around 10 months old and she is a lovely dog. She is a smooth and they are known for being quite headstrong so you need to be reasonably firm with rules etc. I think the long-haired are generally a bit more laid back in temperament but I don't know for sure. I love them anyway, they are fantastic little dogs (who think they are very big dogs) with personality plus. Read heaps about them, there are risks with their backs and they should be kept trim without excess weight so require regular exercise. The std Longs by far have the best nature & are more laidback,less demanding & great all round dogs The std smooths are very aloof,brilliant guard dogs,tend to be more one person but truly devoted to there family. Mini smooths should havea very biddable nature & not be afriad off starngers. The wires are clowns & luv life. There are a number off excellent breeders in WA but pups are usually sold before there born, If you want to see all the breeders & there dogs the best place would be the royal show sat 4oct.You will have many to see & touch. The WA dachie club held there champ show about 2 weeks ago plus the hound club show which would have been a good viewing place, There isnt as many shows coming up soo the royal will have the best turnout. In WA all pups must be registered but we dont have to sell them with papers. Weight is very important in dachies as is good exercise & not over jumping.The spine is there biggest enemy . Dachies should never be treated as precious flowers.these are powerful working breeds who hold all there bold character & allowed to be spoilt you will have a horrible monster on your hands. They can be very yappy & snappy if not socialized & given activity. The std & minis are nore vocal than the longs. I have heard numerous people say they are yappy little dogs but have found the opposite with our girl, don't get me wrong she barks but usually for a reason e.g. visitors. She doesn't believe anyone who doesn't belong to our family should ever enter our house she does settle though when her antics are ignored. She doesn't bark out of boredom (but then she never really gets bored she entertains herself with her toys etc.) She is an active little dog, loves going for walks or doing zoomies around the house with hers or anyone elses toys. Leevers Posted September 26, 2008 Author Share Posted September 26, 2008 Size is purely limited to the amount of space I'm able to provide it during the day, and due to the space restriction, I prefer a small dog until we move into a bigger place of which I'll then get another kelpie or collie. I don't mind having to walk the dog, I don't mind grooming although I prefer a dog that Isn't going to make too big of a mess inside the house or in our bed, and a dog that's going to be calm enough at nights when we're relaxing and will enjoy our company and enjoy spending it's time beside us without the 'Hype' nature of some dogs, however based on comments on particular dachies, I'm considering longhair dachie Once again your replys are appreciated Regards Chris Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
TeamSnag Posted September 28, 2008 Share Posted September 28, 2008 Only time my dogs bark is when they hear someone in my yard, other wise they just sleep around the house like snakes inthe sun ...The going price is around $1000, Keep away from double dapples, if they say they are rare, its cos what they are doin is wrong! Double dapples have so many health issues...And if a reg breeder charges more for papers walk away! And make sure parents are PRA clear! Good luck with it all Chris.. let us know how u go!
