VJB
Hi, I was wondering if anyone uses a whistle for recall training, and if so, how affective is it. I just stumbled upon it while searching internet and its got me thinking it may save my voicebox. Neighbours think I'm yodelling when I call Heidi....... especially when I use high pitched voice and say her name 10 times quickily...... heidi, heidi, heidi, heidi, heidi YEAH, it really sounds like a yodel
DMA
I know my dad, years ago, tried to use one once, but the dogs ignored him using the whistle pretty much completely...
FionaC
Hey VJB - I'm just impressed you can get Heidi to recall .... Mort is of the opinion that things we say are "suggestions" rather than "commands" at the moment OT - but I think we need an update photo or to in the GSP thread, Heidi must have grown a bit recently! poodlefan
Yes, I do. I treat the dogs EVERY time they return to the whistle and I practice it regularly. It certainly beats trying to scream loud enough to recall them when they are some distance off. One little hint.. .your dog's name can be a focussing aid but I'd teach her a distinctive command eg. "come" AND a whistle recall if you want to go that way. Saying her name isn't really telling her to do anything. Give the cue once.. don't beg. Patters
My whistle arrived in the mail yesterday. I'm hoping I can train my dogs to it so I can stop screaming my lungs out when I take all my dogs to run on my isolated beach. Here's hoping!!!! FHRP
vjb, my boys are trained on a 'come in' whistle for retrieving, and yes I use it out on walks as a recall whistle too. Much easier than yelling.
persephone
We whistle, but not with 'a' whistle All our dogs come to a whistle- names are only used if a particular dog has to do something different to the others  Whistling is much less embarrassing, and most dogs respond well ,IMO. My cats have all been recalled by whistle as well.......... was very useful in the city- they had a particular whistle , which they knew
