Dublduck Scissors & Thinning Shears?

I wanna try grooming Spanky myself.

I dunno if I'll like or persevere with it. So I'm interested in inexpensive scissors and thinning shears.

I'd like better quality than the $10-$15 Miller's Forge brand though.

DUBLDUCK 10 Inch Filipino Straight

DUBLDUCK Duchess Thinner 46 tooth

DUBLDUCK Curved Filipino - 10 inch

DUBLDUCK Economy Curved - 8 1/4 Inch

DUBLDUCK Beau Brummel Anodized Curved - 6.5 Inch

Do you all think these are good enough? Better than the cheap Miller's Forge?

If yes, which curved scissors should I get?

Will the 10" straight scissors be handy/necessary for the legs & skirt?

Thanx in advance.

I have been using my Miller's Forge for 6 years :( I am not a groomer but have taken a course in grooming just so that I can rely on myself to groom my MS. In my opinion, a curved 8 1/4inch is quite good to use for my MS. I also use a 10" for scissoring his body and face (my friend who is a groomer finds a 10" too excessively long).

I think it might depend on what length of scissors you are comfortable with or trained in. I was trained in scissoring with all the ultra long shears so I stick to them...

Another friend who owns bichons also prefers a 10" all round. Not too sure if this is considered professional but she goes around snipping with just one pair of Roseline!

Thanx cashew. But I'm more concerned about the quality of the ones I put links to.

Are you using the cheaper Miller's Forge scissors?

I'm just wondering if the Dublduck's are better? Or just more money?

Hi Bonz,

I bought quite a few Miller's Forge shears. Shears are extremely expensive where I used to stay so I went for what my budget allowed then. I think Miller's rather heavy on the hand and Roseline is way lighter. Dub's should be somethign inbetween. If you are way way way into investing, then Lespoochs is the ultimate. For home grooming, I should think that Dub is pretty alright. I have tried them and I find them lighter on the hand than my Miller's. There are many groomers in this forum so I am sure they will give you an accurate view.

I had the priviledge of trying out the Lespoochs shears as my teacher owns quite a few of them! She uses them on show poodles and bichons. The results speak for themselves. You pay for the quality really. :(

I know there are good ones out there. But I wanna keep the prices down.

I don't know if I'll like grooming or be any good at it.

And, I have a lot to buy... 2 scissors, thinning shears, 2 coat kings (2nd one is a coarse one to try on his side & legs), and a clamp-able arm & strap.

Hi Bonz,

I know where you are coming from. It is quite hefty to buy all the items then to realise grooming is not quite your cup of tea. I bought my miller's because it was only to groom my 1 and only MS. We have tried grooming all over---on top of my washing machine, on a make-shift table, etc etc. :) I just could not afford to get the clamp and a proper grooming table  Then to top it off, there are the clipper blades. Quite an investment I would say---for home pet grooming. :(

I lucked out on the grooming table. I made (30yrs ago) a heavy-duty butcher-block prep table that sits in the middle of our kitchen. It's heavy enough that it doesn't move, the top will hold the clamp, and I can walk around it.

I plan on using the groomer to do all clipper work on Spanky 'til I get the hang of scissoring, thinning, and "coat kinging".

Thanx for the links. Those Whals are still more than I wanna spend. But I saw there, the Dublducks (that I picked- in the $25 range) are made by Miller's Forge. So, they probably are a little better than the cheapest "Miller's Forge" brand.

As for the coat kings... Paw Brothers Coat Rakkes are under $15 each, and recommended by some members of a Cocker (only) Forum I belong.

Thanx.
