AnimalMad
Recently i had an adult Samoyed in for grooming who came in a mess of knots and excess coat. He has been bathed/blown out and the body and legs brushed out. The only problem is that his neck area, starting behind the ears, down the neck and parts of the chest are just matts. I shaved out behind the ears as these matts were solid. I made a start on him but he got so distressed i had to send him home and attempt him again this week for his 2nd session. I still have an entire neck, tail and pants to brush knots out of but i am aware this could take another 3 or 4 shirt sessions before i can get it all out, i explained this to the owners too. Can anyone recommend what i can use to aid in getting these knots out? What would you do?
Dali-love
You can try using the coat king. That will cut through the knots and take out excess hair. Be aware though if you comb too much in 1 spot you will get a bold spot. Otherwise what you can try is to cut the knot in half with the length of the hair and than comb out the loose hair. hope this helps
k9kutz
what i normally do is saturate the coat with conditioner and then using the HV force dryer with the condenser nozel on get right in there and use the air pressure to seperate some of the matting then i finish drying with a stand dryer brushing like mad with a pin brush and slicker. That should have hopefully losened up the knots a fair bit then i just go mad with a mat removing tool and coat stripping tool. Good luck its very hard going, i had one in a few months ago- took me nearly 5 hours of solid work to get him fully dematted and brushed out, lucky he was a very good boy and very patient, but if not its a good idea to do it in sessions. Make sure you charge accordingly a samoyed in that state is a big job especially if they dont want to shave him.
Doggrooma
As Dali-love said slide on side of the scissor downwards from the chin under the matts and slice through the matts in a few spots that will help create space so you drag out that dead coat. Just use a plain old long toothed rake to pick thru, you will get there. If its going to distress him too much you could always get the owners to give him a sedative before he comes in. Its not something to routinly do but in some circumstances it makes for a less stressful situation.
