First Time Puppy Owner
http://www.ingleburnvet.com.au/antihistamines.htm Hi There This website tell you what you should calculate out as the correct doseage to give to your dog of antihistamines - but I am seriously having a blonde day and can't work out if I am calculating this correctly So my boy weighs 38kgs and I was thinking Polaramine so what I think is that I sould be giving is 15.2 mgs (ie 0.4mgs x 38kgs = 15.2mgs) but that means seven tablets a day - that doesn't seem right does it??? Sorry and thank you in advance for your help! Suz Edited September 21, 2008 by First Time Puppy Owner
Nekhbet
I gave a 40kg rottweiler 1 phenergen tablet a day and it settled his itch. I trust it and dont go straight for a high dose since most of these products only advocate 1 tablet for an adult human per 24 hours

Has anyone tried Telfast - the hive and skin one on a dog before??? (Green packet) And would you halve the tablet?

I think you should try to see if slightly higher doses of phenergan (1-2 tablets/day) work. I have heard Claritine works well for some dogs. How is Benson? Are his allergies back ? Sorry, haven't tried Telfast.
Golden Rules
Hey Suz I used to give Duncan one polaramine tablet a day - 6mg tabs. Directions on packet say one tab every 12 hours for first 24 hours then reduce to one tab a day. Don't ask me about effectiveness long term, his allergies turned out to be beef etc - but the polaramine did make him a little dopey however it did help with itching for the few days I gave it to him. Big hug for Master Benson!
First Time Puppy Owner
Yep back with avengance Just had his belly/groin area shaved a bit at the groomers and his hind legs a little too where he has been licking this week and mats had built up - but seeing a he can't stand me doing it and runs away we went to a groomer instead. Also had a bath in Malasba and then a second bath in the Evening Primrose Oil Shampoo just to see if that would soothe his skin. Hmmm well I am going to try the telfast green box because it is specifically for skin allergies and to start off with, and see how we go with with half a tablet morning and night as having googled it says no adverse effects on dogs studied having used it for 6 mths daily. Just thinking - if it's meant to help people specifically with itchy skin it might be effective for dogs too that show no other signs than just itchy skin?!?! ashka1
I have a 70+ KG Newfoundland that has only 1 tablet per day and this works well
First Time Puppy Owner
Will keep you guys informed - at least no big hot spots yet or anything - a few little scabs but can get to them in time before they turn nasty *sigh*
Golden Rules
I wouldn't normally suggest this but what about clipping him during summer? This may make him cooler, less itchy (spots itch more when it's hot) and also it would be easier to bath and dry him more regularly during summer. I had my first goldie Hamish clipped at the beginning of summer, he carried on like a puppy instead of an eight year old, and he was a cinch to dry after the beach or river. Some people say the coat doesn't grow back so well but I never noticed and when you get into dire straits such as with Benson, it might be worth a shot? Can't not afford to do desensitation injects and know that they are not a gaurentee anyway so am not looking at that as an option. Will also see if vets in Australia stock Atopica yet as I saw in on a US site and it is supposed be excellent. Thank you for all your responses guys - very very much appreciated!!! sas
You can get Atopica, it's pricey, for my dog it would be just over $100 a week. Best to get the allergy testing so you actually know what you're up against.
stormie
Atopica is available in Australia. Yep, it's good, but remember, it's an immune suppressant.
First Time Puppy Owner
Oh is it - I didn't realise that it was an immune suppressant Ok well I will just continue trying antihistamines till I find one that work best for him.
