Today I am going to take Ruby on her very first walk outside our house!. It's very exciting. I just wanted some tips on how to get her to walk nicely on the lead. We have had a few practice runs walking around our backyard but she just seems to jump up as she is walking. Any tips?

Only one-

make sure the collar is tight enough that it can't come off, and then just walk...no stopping or attention for jumping/tantrums,etc.. no talking or fussing- just walk in a nice straight line.... then ,when YOU choose, you stop, bend down, get her to sit, and tell her how wonderfully she's done- maybe give her a treat...then head home

All this in only 5-10 minutes.... then do it again this afternoon...

just my suggestion- I don't let pups dictate...they may be cute, but they are the ones wearing the collar

hehe, gotta luv puppy cavs.... they are born with springs in their legs. I echo persephone suggestion. She'll stop bouncing eventually. It took a bit of work to get our 2 KCS healing proficiently so don't give up.

Put lead on in the house and let her drag it around for a while. do not make any fuss over the lead. This will get her used to the weight of it on her collar. Play with her treat her which also reinforces a positive association with the lead.

get some tasty treats, get her to walk next to you by luring her to walk along side you with tasty treats. let the lead drag along the ground. If you have a hallway in the house, use that with her against the wall and you towards the middle of the hallway.

Once she walks next to you without you touching the lead, you pick up the lead and repeat.. Treat every step the she follows you. Treat her at your side..

I use things like cheese or kabana/cherio sausage cut small.
