Guest magnum
Can someone tell me know your dogs can catch Kennel Cough from other dogs, is it while the dog is coughing or before/after the cough? I was at a show on the week-end & heard quite a few dogs with a cough just worried about my dogs now
morgan
Before, during and after the cough

puggy_puggy
Like morgan said KC can be transmitted before there are any symptoms, whilst their are symptoms and after the symptoms have cleared up. I was at a show on the week-end & heard quite a few dogs with a cough just worried about my dogs now How irresponsible of people to take their dogs out whilst they have a cough. WreckitWhippet
It's a royal pain in the arse, we've had it go through the kennels a couple of times and being vaccinated offers them very little protection, infact my vacc'd dogs came out worse off then the one's who were not. I don't know how many times you have to say it to people.... LEAVE YOUR BLOODY COUGHING DOGS AT HOME Two times we have had two months off showing because other exhibitors can't miss a show
poodlefan
There is a non-KC virus doing the rounds at the moment. It's not as bad as KC but it's still a pain in the arse.
Guest magnum
thanks, I will just have to wait & see is my guys come down with anything now. It may not have been KC but some dogs were coughing so makes one think it was
poodlefan
It's been through here.. the cough dogs developed here was nowhere near that real gag/retch/vomit mucus one that serious KC produces. Thank God.
PAX
My dogs had it a few months ago and each one showed symptoms approx two weeks after the last one, how bizarre is that as they go everywhere together so should of caught it at the same time. It wasn't a big deal apart from being a pain in the but and having all the dogs house bound. Also my neighbours dog never contracted it so I believe they need direct contact with the cough or the organic matter coughed up. Puppies and old dogs would be more at risk. I also found homeopathic rememdies worked better than anything else, providing your dogs keep eating and looking bright and happy.
Owned by Shelties
I have just had the past month off with mine, pisses me right off knowing that people are taking their dogs to shows and giving them cough syrup to help disguise the cough. Mum's dogs have just come down with it last week.. Can a dog catch it twice right after it just got over it ( hope it makes sense) Edited September 15, 2008 by Owned by Shelties
PAX
One vet told me that my dogs should be protected now for five years and another vet said for life.
Flaves
My dogs have had it twice this year. I have kept them away from shows for between 7-21 days after the cough stops. It goes around. I am just annoyed that they have got it after being vaccinated I mean if they are going to get it why bother? Also i was reading up and i read that they can shed the virus for 6-14 weeks after they have had it. Is that true?
WreckitWhippet
There's really no point in vaccinating against KC, it's like the common cold and there's a large number of strains.

I wont be in future. I have found out the hard way there is no point as they have still go it. It is just annoying
Rappie
Also i was reading up and i read that they can shed the virus for 6-14 weeks after they have had it.Is that true? The virus can remain in the nasal passages for up to 3 months or so , so potentially it can still be spread. Vaccination against parainfluenza and bordatella doesn't guarantee that vaccinated individuals wont be infected - but with some immunity the clinical signs are limited (not non existant). Limited clinical signs (sneezing, coughing etc) limits the spread of disease to other individuals.
tracey83
Saxon is just starting to slowly recover from KC that he picked up whilst at a boarding kennel... I didn't realise that it could stick around for so long! Thanks!!!
