Burst Abscess Updated

I have just noticed one of my fur kids had some matted coat on her rump which wasn' t there a few days ago when I brushed her, closer inspection after been blown back from the smell I cut her hair away from area and looks like a cat has clipped her.

Not too sure apart from bathing in Salty water to keep the area clean and expressing the goop from it what else could I do?? Should I take her to the vet or would this be ok?? I have got some Antiseptic powder would I be able to put that on the help dry it out? Any suggestions would be great.

Until you can get to the vet, wash regularly with warm salty water and pour betadine into the wound. Don't let it close back over.

I wouldn't put powder in, stick to betadine.

Thank you for that, is it best not to let it close over an scab up? I haven't had this happen to my dogs until now

The homeopathic remedy Hepar Sulph is fantastic for abscesses, intact or burst - cleans them right up - just give orally several times a day for several days as well as using some calendula ointment topically to help the healing process.

Could you use Ilium Neocort?

Don't know, I have been using calendula ointment for over 20 years for any condition involving an infected wound of any sort, on dogs, kids, horses etc.

Haven't used a vet ointment in that whole time, so can't help you there..

Might need a course of antibiotics.

Clip the hair away leaving a good margin, flush the open wound with peroxide.

If the the dog has a temp it may need ABs but otherwise they generally heal fine.

I had a closer inpsection today and could not find a puncher wound / hole and now looks to be a Hot Spot??? I am taking her to vet tomorrow to get a proper diagnosis instead of guessing as to what it maybe.

I will download photo's of the wound tomorrow and will let you know what the vet said..

Good idea to take her to the vets if you can't be sure of what it is.

If it is a hotspot then you could use baby curash powder on it to dry it out.

Went to vet and she told me it was the tail end of a Hot Spot, gave me some Antibiotics and some Neo-topical cream to use twice a day. She said it should be healed up with in the week and with me bathing twice a day with salty warm water was a good thing. She want to shave my dogs coat off until I told her NO way she's a show dog.
