Of course she won't be able to join the "puppy" classes, but a lot of obedience classes have basic classes for adult dogs too. LittleRock Posted September 13, 2008 Share Posted September 13, 2008 My staffy is only 7 months so l cant quite say. But l've been having behavioural problems and lead problems. Well the trainer that came out today worked wonders. I now have the knowledge to work on the issues and make our interaction with him positive and enjoyable for everyone. What training you have to do might take a little longer, but they can always learn if your CONSISTENT.... Its never too late to make some positive changes... WalandLibby Posted September 14, 2008 Share Posted September 14, 2008 The issues with training older dogs is not that they can't learn new stuff, but that they tend not to forget the older stuff (that you'd rather they did ;-) But with a commitment to developing your training skills and understanding of what causes your dog to act in ways you'd rather she didn't, you should be able to teach her loads, and I bet she'll teach you loads more. Personally, neither of my dogs started training as young dogs - my Foxy's 'real' training started when she was 4yrs (I think we attended one or two classes when she was much younger), my Koolie when he was nearly 6. And both have been just the most amazing dogs to train. I haven't always been worthy of them, but I hope I'm gradually rising to their level. She never did master 'sitting' (she was an ex-show dog so was taught to stand) but we had loads of fun joining in. If you dog is a bit over-excitable, it is more of a reason to start going. I think you will both gain a lot from the classes (and it is fun doing training together too). If she is really an excitable dog, once she has mastered basic obedience, she may enjoy agility too. Your staffy will definitely benefit and will probably be more mature and able to handle the concentration aspect a little better than when she was younger. Charlie will be turning 6 in a few months and we still go regularly, it's great for socialisation and also as a bonding activity that the two of you do together. Best of luck with it.
