As per the other thread with the Canon competition, here is the start of our own little challenge.

I thought I might as well just make one up & think of some rules.

Rules:

There are 3 objects, common to most households or easy/cheap to buy.

You can choose any one object or all 3, either individually or together.

Each photo posted in this thread must come with a description of how you did it & EXIF data.

The photo/s must be taken by the person posting it.

You cannot use old photos you may have of the objects, they must be taken for the challenge.

You can submit as many enties as you like.

Challenge runs for 1 week & ends Thursday 18th September 3pm.

There is no winner, just a bunch of people having fun & learning new techniques/ideas.

If anyone has ideas to add/amend rules, let me know & I will change this post.

The next 2 people who reply to this can pick the other 2 objects :)

Challenge 1 Items:

1. Tennis ball

2. Fork

3. Pair of shoes

NO FAIR, I can't download photos ATM (stupid safe place for my camera cable) and would so love to have entered. Maybe I can jump in later if I find my cable if this comp continues ?

Oh and since I'm here replying can the third item be a pair of shoes :)

I think Vickie said you can enter all week? So there's time!

BTW if it's a standard usb cable with the little end and the big end, I have spares and would be happy to send you one - PM me if you're interested.

hehe I'm waiting for my local woolies to restock their card readers Vickie. It's killing me as I have so many pictures waiting to download LOL.

KJA, what a very nice offer, but I know it is in the house somewhere so I will just keep looking for now. If I get really desperate and I can't get a card reader anywhere (I haven't looked around yet as I have had sick kids home) I might just take you up on the offer, Thanks.

Are the photos allowed to be manipulated/edited or do they have to be completely natural?

I was just about to ask this, plus what is EXIF data? Were do I get that? (it is prob a stupid question).

It is the settings you used for the shot - aperture, shutter speed, ISO etc. If you view file info in a photo program you'll find it, or you might know yourself.

Woohoo! The first entry :)

I don't think we have to have doglets in the shots...I sure hope not anyway, it's tough enough as is!

I dunno, Vickie will need to answer this but was is "edited"? That's a whole ball of wax right there!

If it's like the Canon one, absolutely everything goes it looked like to me! Except for cloning in the actual items, maybe, I think their rules said you had to actually shoot the physical item.

I don't know the answers to all your questions :) I am just making it up as I go along...like I said, anyone want to make/amend rules, go for it!

I think I will start another thread though for the posting of the actual pics & call this a discussion one.

Ruth, I am happy for it to be once a month, but for the diehards  , I think we should try once a week & see how it goes.

Georgina, dogs are optional

iltby, not sure? I feel photoshop is fair game (especially since I have so much still to learn with it)

kazzie, DEFINITELY not professional only, since that would cut most of us out. I'm going to start another thread for pics, can you repost your photo there?

Question.

Do most of you use auto focus or manual focus? I find my camera will get stuck and not let me take a shot at close up. Is that because I am too close and passed my focal length for my lens? Or is it because I am expecting to much out of my little D40x.

Rocco, I hate auto focus  some cameras are better than others. if it is struggling, its not sure what you are trying to focus on (usually in lower light)or, yes you are too close to focus on the thing that you are telling it to focus on.

I use AF almost exclusively.

If you are noticing this when you get closer to your subject, my guess is, yes, you are too close for the minimum focus distance of the lens. Back off a hair or two and see what happens. You may also need more light or contrast on the area you are trying to focus on.
