~Aimee~
We are wanting to add some raw meat into our puppy's diet and were wondering what's the best to give her for her age and size? Should we start with chicken wings, chicken necks or just plain chicken breast? As she is only little (a cavalier puppy) I'm worried she may choke. Gayle.
Chicken necks would be good....give them to her whole so she has to chew them, and only feed them to her under supervision. Brisket bones are good as well. Chicken wings are very high in fat (which is why they bake so crisp and yummy!) so go easy on them or you might end up with a tubby bubby. Nevafollo
i avoid giving my pugs chicken necks til they are about 6 months (and abit bigger) cause 9 time out of 10 they eat them too quick and choke. Dont know if your cav would be similar perhaps ask another cav person. when they are tiny pups i feed them chicken mince.

You can give your baby Cav some small chicken necks, not always easy to find unfortunately but better than too big. Just make sure you keep an eye on her when she first starts having them. Did you get a diet leaflet from your breeder?
puggy_puggy
Grab some chicken carcuss mince (sometimes called pet mince) from either your butcher or Lenards. This mince has the chicken bones crushed up in it so is perfect for puppies. Lamb bones such as ribs are also great for puppies as they are soft enough for them to chew up. When feeding meat you have to make sure that you also feed bone with it so that you have the right ratio of calcium (bone) to phosphorus (meat) otherwise growth issues can arise. laffi
I think it would be good if you read some books about raw feeding to understand a bit better why raw meaty bones are better than just meat (or chicken breast). My local library has some great books about BARF.
~Aimee~
Thanks for your help. I think i'll start with chicken mince first and then introduce chicken necks when she's a bit older. I think it would be good if you read some books about raw feeding to understand a bit better why raw meaty bones are better than just meat (or chicken breast). My local library has some great books about BARF. Yeah, I really have no idea! Just that heaps of people have suggested to feed raw chicken and raw chicken bones so I assume it must be good for dogs. Gayle.
It's VERY good for them, especially whole pieces (necks, drumsticks, marylands etc) as it exercises their jaws and cleans their teeth, as well as being an excellent source of protein and calcium. Puppies often chew on anything, including you lol, when their teething and need that outlet. Not to many pigs ears though, just in case she gets the runs. Raw mince from Lennards is fantastic, mixed with veges and a bit of cooked pasta is very good for her.
persephone
;) At 11 weeks she is plenty big enough to enjoy chewing bones! The bigger necks, and wings may be better- less likelihood of her gulping down chunks! Turkey necks may be something to consider as well- whole chicken carcases, or pieces of lamb flap -with bone in. Unless a pup is very tiny, I am scared of using chicken necks- their diameter is almost the same as a dog oesophagus- and can be gulped/swallowed, and become stuck :p This becomes a higher risk if the necks are cut into sections... these sections are easily swallowed.... and a bit of cooked pasta is very good for her. Not really- IMO-dogs don't need things made with flour You may enjoy reading thru THIS THREAD - It will get you thinking! This is exactly what I'm after of. I don't want my little puppy to choke. I will have a read of that link you posted. We actually gave her a pig's ear to try tonight but she just sniffed at it and then went and did something else. I will perserve though. Maybe she doesn't know she is supposed to chew on it! Lol I will try the raw chicken mince mixed with vegies and her puppy kibble. Which vegies are best? Can we give cooked rice also?

Raw meaty bones (like chicken wings and other types mentioned before) are good for many reasons. First you get the right ratio of calcium (from bones) and phosphorous (meat). By chewing the bones your dog will naturally clean her teeth, which is going prevent any gum infections later on (that's why mince is nowhere near as good as raw meat bones). There is a recent thread about what veggies and fruits are good for your dogs. Just remember, dogs are carnivores they don't really need fruits and veggies as much as they need meat, bones and offal. If veggies are not crushed properly your dog will not be able to digest them so you will be just giving her fiber. Dogs do not need grains: so pasta, rice etc are just fillers. They are unnecessary and can cause allergies.
