jet
Hi last night I noticed my staffy licking her rear end (not her gentalia) and there was a strong metallic smell coming from her anus. Just wondering what could it be or its cause etc.
stormie
Smells like anal glands! They might be full and need expressing - maybe a quick trip to the vet to see if someone can empty them for you?
Cavandra
I am not sure about "metallic smell".........but if it was a disgusting vomit-worthy smell, it is the "stuff" from the anal glands............
persephone
Anal glands have emptied, or are leaking.... What does she get fed? have you ever had her anal glands expressed at the vets or anywhere? Anal glands express when a dog is very frightened, often. usually they empty when a dog defecates- and transmit the dog's scent onto the droppings. Modern diets often don't contain enough bone/fibre to produce nice firm stools to help squeeze out the glands .. so the glands then fill up, and either leak, or need to be emptied Your vet or groomer will show you how, if needed- , or perhaps she needs a slight change in food ... jet
We have only had her for 2 weeks as she is adopted and we have started feeding her chicken frames, necks and premium kibble. She does cower sometimes and I think she was disciplined quite hard. She is also going through a false pregnency (milk and adopting my shoe as a pup) and has just been desexed!!!!!! I'm taking her to the vet on Saturday and ask about the anal glands stuff.
puggy_puggy
Sounds like anal glands. Get the vet to express them when you are there.
