Firefox
I have a 14 month old GSD which has been doing a few local shows however I need to teach him some basic obedience ie walking by my side when not in the ring. He has quite a big coat and I'm considering getting the fur saver but I'm not sure it will be as effective as the standard check chain. What do you recommend? Just Midol
I don't like checks. I'd never use one, all the "pressure" is in one spot on the neck. Without knowing how hard/soft your dog is I'd just go for a prong
Kavik
Midol, this is for a show dog. You can't use a prong in the show ring! Personally for training I prefer a check chain over a fur saver as there are smaller increments of correction as there are smaller links, fur savers have big links so when one goes through the collar it is a bigger change. (if that makes sense ) Not sure about difference in saving coat as I have not used a fur saver regularly. What about a nylon check collar? Or is the dog needing a chain collar? Just Midol
Kavik didn't read properly "ie walking by my side when not in the ring" Or I misunderstood, I thought she meant for training outside of showing?
Kavik
I assume she means for use in the show ring as well as training, though I could be wrong.
DeltaCharlie
If the dog has done a few shows already I figured it must have a reasonably controlled method of moving around the ring. I thought that the collar would be for when she was not in the ring. Or Midol and I could be as wrong as each other...
Firefox
I'm after more control outside the ring mainly at the shows - there are so many different smells there. It would be nice to walk him around without the constant pulling!
Just Midol
Ahhh. Well, the ANKC don't approve of prongs from memory so you might get into strife.
KitKat
I'd consider a Rogz (cripes i seem to be spruiking them a lot today!) limited slip check...made from heavy duty material, very strong, very good quality and won't mar the coat at all. I use them on my two boys and they are fabulous...even when my youngest boy is being a bit of a brat
4 Paws
I've had a few gsd show people purchase the leather martingale or limited check for shows Edited August 31, 2008 by 4 Paws
ish
I like the Blackdog heavy duty training collars - they're a martingale with fabric rather than chain (I've never had it cut the coat of any of my dogs) and super strong.
Firefox
Thanks everyone for your feedback - I'm going to trial a martingale collar.
Erny
I like martingale collars (where they suit the dog) .... and although I like the ones with the buckle adjustment (as pictured above), I don't like that the buckle is aligned to the centre - right where the dog's windpipe is. Not sure why they don't align the buckle so that it is up close to the "D" ring where the chain runs through .
