BTW Amazon was the site I was looking for originally. If you bring up a lens it'll give you a link to peoples pics taken with that lens. Pros and amateurs. It hasn't helped my decision making process though

Thanks to kja I'm soon to own my very own 50mm 1.8

I may still invest in an L lens, but I'll wait and see how I go with the 50mm first.

I don't think you'll need one if you just want it for mainly portraits. You have the 70-300 IS lens, that's a very good lens indeed. The 1.8 is a great lens too.

I have a 70-300 & a 50mm 1.8. I find both great for portraits.

I think the trick with the 70-300 is to set up the shot correctly to maximise DOF, if that is what you want.

The further away the background is from the dogs head, the more blur you will get.

or choosing a background that is all the same will help too.
