Gerda the Schnauzer
Hiya, Me again, sorry, its my first puppy! Gerda is panting a lot today, while awake (haven't noticed anything while sleeping). She has fresh water available all the time, so doesn't seem to be thirsty... and it isn't very hot, and its not really related to running around or being active. Could it be to do with the liver treats I have been giving her? Or a bit of left over roast chook breast? (had a bit of stock on the edges). She had a chicken wing for breaky, and supercoat dry food, wetted, for lunch. I have no idea what it means, but it does seem odd and not something she hasn't done before. I don't really know what is cause for concern in a puppy... or how many liver treats are too many? (I have used up about half a cup maybe?). Thanks for any help

Paganman
Whats the temp? My dogs pant in 23 degrees and if its humid it makes it worse.Dogs feel heat more than humans do and what seems ok for us can be to hot for a dog
Dogsfevr
Teething & a tad stressed can bring on panting that is tad more than normal
Gerda the Schnauzer
Hiya, She is a standard schanuzer, 9.5 weeks old. She is still panting... so far stress is the only thing that fits. I've sat with her on her cushion all evening which seemed to calm her a bit (she gets very snappy/barky in the evening). She has had a rough day or two with my daughter (who is learning the boundaries of playing with a puppy). Although it was humid for a while today, its still quite cool, and under 20` in the shade (if not colder!!). Do they teeth this early? I hope its nothing serious. If she still is panting tomorrow I will take a quick video.... Ok, back to sitting with her now! Good excuse to watch TV...
persephone
How warm is the inside of your house ? Is she more restless than usual? puppies tend to pant a bit more than adults,IMO as they are active little things! Sitting with her/patting her etc when she is 'stressed' may ,I'm afraid, only make her MORE stressed/anxious! pups are not made to think like a human- she pants/snaps/grizzles, and you sit with her ,telling her how wonderful she is........... So ... the behaviour continues, as you are telling her it's GOOD Pay her attention when she is settled and quiet!
poodlefan
Gerda.. take a deep breath. RELAX She's not made of glass. Even is she is stressed, it's all part of learning life in your household. She'll learn to cope and you don't need to try and soothe her. It should be business as usual in the household, not the dog commanding your attention with her behaviour. Unless she' obviously in pain, is vomiting or has diarehha for more than 24 hours or is listless you needn't panic. Just out of interest why are you wetting her dry food? She has teeth and she can use them. ETA: Half a cup of liver is a fair bit for a pup. I'd expect to see 'results' when she toilets. I think there are better treats and a mix of treats is a good idea. Remember that you only need to use treats the size of your smallest fingernail - they don't have to be big. What's she getting all the treats for? becks
I'd cut back on the liver, infact for pups I tend to stick to things like boiled chicken for training treats. To much liver can give them an upset tum but over the long term has been linked to causing the bones along the back and tail to fuse together (something that has happened to one of my giants and this was the first thing my vet asked - how much liver in her diet!!! In her case it has another cause, but something to bare in mind). As said by others, be careful what behaviours you 'comfort' as the dog sees this as 'yes, you are right to feel like that about ......'
Gerda the Schnauzer
Thankyou everyone. She is fine now, and occasionally pants, and I leave it be. I think that time it was from being told off too much by my overly-zelous daughter (when she would have had no idea why she was being told off etc). So daughter has had things explained to her, again, and Gerda seems to be coping better with it too. I was treating for training (basics, sit, down, lie down). I still haven't finished that packet, so must have cut back a lot. We only ever gave tiny tiny pieces... I guess it added up though (she is very well trained hahaha). Thanks Becks, I'll give them up I think. Normally left over chicken lying about and she likes it more anyway! Poodlefan - does that mean I can stop wetting the food?? The breeder was doing it, and I wasn't sure when I could stop ROFL! Thanks again. I'll get used to what's important and what isn't soon enough I'm sure
puggy_puggy
Why not try bits of fresh veggies & fruits as treats. ie. carrots, celary, apple And yes panting can be a sign of pain but as other said this may be because she has teeth coming through. If she is not doing it all the time don't worry.
vrox
Poodlefan - does that mean I can stop wetting the food?? The breeder was doing it, and I wasn't sure when I could stop ROFL! I don't see what's so bad about wetting their dry food (with a little bit of warm water), especially as pups, when they're more inclined to swallow and scoff down their food rather than chew nicely I do it with my pup and I think it certainly helps her to digest easier.
