Buying Medication Online

 Share

Recommended Posts

My dog is on Vetmedin and it is quite an expensive medication.

Does anyone know if it's legal to purchase it online from overseas? It's a lot cheaper in the US and would like to buy it online and have it sent to Australia.

Has anyone had any experience doing this?

Thank you!

if you can buy it in Aus, you can import personal quantities from overseas as long as it is not an organic or dangerous substance or from a country there is a certain trade block on.

if no one here can help you, just email customs to double check. they do get back to you very quickly (even when asking them if i can import yak milk and cheese from Tibet lol)

Is it a human drug that could be purchased via a chemist?

We have a prescription for 2 drugs that are human drugs and it is much cheaper to get them from the chemist - so the vet gave us an ongoing script and we get it there for about two thirds of the price we used to pay at the vet.

Thank you to everyone who replied!

This is the site I was actually looking at. It's my understanding that you don't need a prescription from this site.

Did you just order it? Did you contact customs?

Also how did your dogs respond to this medication? Mine was on Fortekore but the vet thinks that Vetmedin will increase his life expectance.

ETA: I just received an email from Inhouse Pharmacy stating that they aren't able to send Vetmedin as it's destroyed upon entry into Australia.

Any other suggestions??

TIA!

Wildfire.

I just ordered online from them, no prescription required. I did not contact customs, I received it in the mail just over 1 week after ordering.

They must have changed their shipping rules since I got my last lot in January. That is very strange, as it is actually manufactured in Australia, either Sydney or Newcastle, can't remember which.

My boy Basil died in February.

He had been taking it for about 6 months and there was definitely an improvement in his quality of life after he started on it.

His was not cardiomyopathy though, he had a leaking left mitral valve, it was only a matter of time.

Hi longdogs,

Can't help as far as ordering from O/S. I was thinking of ordering a thyroid glandular product from the US for my current girl, who is hypothyroid. A friend sent me her left-over bottle from her previous dog and I'm sure that it made a big difference. Couldn't find a similar product here in OZ, as the postage from the US for what I was after was horrendous :mad I was since told that even if I ordered it from O/S that I wouldn't be guaranteed to get it :o

My previous Bull Terrier, Jessie had DCM and was prescribed Fortekor to start with, then we switched her to Vetmedim (Pimobendan) after a few months and it made a huge difference. She had much more energy :( Her prognosis when diagnosed was "6 months, 12 if she's lucky". Jessie made it to 3 years :) Jessie was also on a BARF diet and lots of vitamin/herbal supplements. Her heart vet was astounded and called her an inspiration :)

Hope you manage to find a cheaper source of Vetmedin as it is very expensive.

Good luck with your doggy.
