Poor Banjo was stung by a Bee yesterday  . I noticed one of his eyes was a bit swollen when we got back from a walk and then five minutes later his whole face had swollen up. I rang the emergency Vet and he said to give him an Antihistamine tablet. The swelling had gone down alot this morning and now he's back to his handsome self  .

what is the safest antihistamine to give a dog and how much? When my dog was younger he was bitten by something on his ear and it swelled up. I did not give him anything and it eventually went down. Would like to have some on hand in case of emergency.

I remember when it happened to my boy and they told me to bring him down... he had just swollen up however an hour later in the waiting room it had gone down completely without any aid at all... that's one hour of our lives we will never get back!!

the next time it happened he went into anaphylactic (sp) shock and I am so glad our vet was open and nearby!

Try this link http://www.ingleburnvet.com.au/antihistamines.htm

A search of the forum will bring up lots of answers too.

Most human anthistamines are fine. I have Claratyne, which are once a day for humans. Recently used two tablets for a French Bulldog that came out in massive hives/welts from a reaction to something.

I also have had in the past Prednil tablets on hand (which is a cortisone & antihistamine). You would have to get them from the vets but one of them for a bee sting etc has done the job in reducing the swelling in a matter of minutes.

I have been told to try Claratyne tablets for my 2 dallys who have allergies. One is scratching a lot. Both have been washed in Pyohex. The dally scratching heaps has small lumps under his back and front legs and tummy. I am also looking at changing their diet.

There is always a packet of Polaramine tablets in the family first aid box here.

Recommended by a medical doctor years ago as ideal for allergic reactions such as those from beestings. A tried and tested remedy, useful for humans and dogs alike. Have used them on adults, children, and on small puppies from 6 weeks if stung by a wasp or bee.

Have always just used one tablet only - follow the directions, I think it says one every 12 hours. They are tiny tablets.

Available over the counter from the Chemist.
