Hey,

Have posted about this a few times but I just cant seem to find the answer!

My lab is 11 weeks old and has been in his crate of a nighttime ever since I got him 3 weeks ago and adores it! He takes all his treasured possessions in there and doesnt cry when put in there at night. However, He pees in it every night! I was getting up and taking him to the toilet up until about 3 nights ago as he was peeing in it anyways so there was no point me getting up! I thought it could have been a territorial thing so I stopped replacing the bedding but it hasnt stopped! He wees then lies in it night after night! what do i do??? he doesnt cry at all when he needs to go to the toilet unless he needs to do number twos... :)

Im out of answers for it and am starting to wonder if it is a puppy thing and he will grow out of it or there is something wrong..

Please help!

Cheers,

kristin :)

THat was your first mistake.

Get up EVERY 2 hours and take him to the loo.

He is a baby and needs regulat toileting until he gets the hang of it.

I thought it could have been a territorial thing so I stopped replacing the bedding but it hasnt stopped!

THis was your second mistake

Have you washed all his wee'd on items in vinegar or another detergent that gets rid of all smells???

If you haven't you should as this may also help reduce his peeing.

Feed him a few hours before bed and make sure that you take him to the loo a couple of times before bed.

Put him to bed with NO treats (food ones) and then 2 hours later take him again and wait till he goes - no playing at all.

Put him back to bed and REPEAT every 2 hours.

Yes it is a pain in the bum but it works.

YOu need ot be consitent in your approach to toilet training other wise he gets confused.

However liken him to a small baby and that is the size of his bladder, if you catch him weeing, growl at him a no, then take him out side and use a word for toilet to get him to finish.

DO NOT smack him for weeing and dont tell him off if you did NOT see him do it.

Keep at it but honestly consistency is the key

Good luck

God, you must be going nuts.

I think i haz flava! (great nickname, by the way) is right — you're going to have to bite the bullet and get up every two hours.

Was he weeing before you used to get up in the night or after? It's clearly a habit now, and you need to train him out of it. The only way is to catch him before he goes.

Wash the bedding in Bio-Zet detergent. It's a biological detergent that will remove the smell so that he can't even smell traces of it.

Please don't let him lay in his own wee, that's disgusting and he's only doing it because he doesn't know how to tell you he needs to go somewhere else to do a wee.

I have been taking him out every 2-3 hours up until about 3 nights ago. He would not be allowed to play and he was put straight back into his crate - he would still wee at interval times! Should I go back to getting up every 2-3 hours?

He is not a big drinker and doesnt drink before he goes to bed but if he does I take him out til he does a wee. He also doesnt have water during the night or treats. he does have toys in is bed however... would this make a difference?

I know its disgusting letting him lie in his wet bedding I hate it but what can you do when you have no fresh bedding in the middle of the night? And all wet bedding (and anything else he happens to pee on) gets washed in vinegar to remove smell..

So, having all those bases covered what other tips have you got? I appreciate all this by the way I need all the help I can get...

Cheers,

Kristin

Yes take him out every 2 or 3 hours, it may take hima few nights to get it. Now though you have to undo the damage as such of the last few nights letting him lay in it.

Take him out, if he has an accident remove the newspaper (use newspaper far easier) and put fresh stuff - a 2 minute job.

You should take him out for a wee even if he does NOT have a drink.

He needs to wee before he goes to bed, then every 2-3 hours.

ETA at night none of my pups had toys. The crate was to sleep in and sleep in only at night time - no toys and no treats

I have nothing more to add except that you must be exhausted, Kristin.

Just remember, this will all be a distant memory one day. He will learn to hang on eventually. You just need to get there as quickly as possible.

Will tell you a story

WHen i got hunta i was up every few hours for about 4 weeks.

Every single night, drove me batty, she would go to the loo, go in the crate then cry for ages, i would fall asleep then be wokn up to take her out again.

Then one night i slept like the dead, i was that tired.

She slept through too with no accidents.

It will happen it will just take a few weeks of consistancy and he will get it, also remember that boys can be slower than girls. :thanks:

You must be so tired and frustrated.

I do not have personal experience in this situation but I've always been told that if in your situation you should take away all of the bedding in the crate. A good friend rescued an older puppy that had been bred at a mill and needed to do this. If I recall correctly it took about 2 weeks after removing ALL of the bedding to get her to finally sleep through the night. She then gradually added bedding, starting with newspaper.

What you have on your hands is a pup that has learned to ignore the instinct to keep his den clean so you have to make weeing in his crate as unpleasant as possible as well as get up every 2 hours during the night. Good luck.

When we first got Henschke (2 weeks ago), I gave him a little drink at night time (the last being around 9.00pm) and then out to do a wee before bed time. Then up through the night as soon as I heard his collar tinkle. (He has a collar and ID tag that tinkle when he moves - very handy!) For the first week I was getting up 2-3 times a night. During the day he was going out for wees, what seemed like all the time, every half hour, after feeding, playing, waking, etc. This has now been reduced to every 1-2 hours.

We bought him a crate - one for an adult Golden Retriever, put his bed at the back of the crate and then newspaper at the front. We sprayed the newspaper with that stuff that smells like wee (stinks horrid!) and then left him to it. I heard him shuffle in the crate and when I woke up in the morning, he had not peed - he held on the whole night. The third night he did this we realised he was holding on. He wakes us up at 5.30 in the morning now, I get up, take him out for a pee and then back to bed where he sleeps until 6.30ish.

We will soon be taking out the newspaper (as he just shreds it) and replacing the whole of the inside of the crate with one bed (i.e. mattress). (As the mattress we use comes out of his day bed.)

My understanding is that dogs don't like to pee where they sleep. You could try doing what we planned to do; we just got lucky with our pup.

ETA: changed word bed to 'mattress' for clarity.

I would take the bedding out altogether. A bit hard in winter I know, but I have always been told this works & did this with my last 2 pups & neither had even one accident in their crate at night from 8 weeks. I put bedding in about 12 weeks I think.

Thanks so much for the wisdom!

Have had three nights at present without any 'accidents'...He has even started crying to be let out  although he is not yet reliable we are definitely on the right track!! Woohoo!

I ended up taking out the bedding except for one towel which is scrunched into one corner for him to lean on...

Will keep you updated on progress!

Thanks heaps,

Kristin
