Grooming After De-sexing?

 Share

Recommended Posts

Picking up a rescue poodle cross tomorrow who has been in to be de-sexed and is quite matted. Just wondering if I can get his coat delt with sooner rather than later?

Would a mobile groomer be able to come clip him prior to the ten days recovery time?

You cant bath him while he has stitches in. He can be clipped just watch that they are gentle with him & dont stretch out his back legs or clip near his boys bits, which will be shaved anyway.

yup, knew about the bathing ;) thankfully he's not whiffy!

will have to post asking for some recommendations - sorry about the short reply and lack of capitals - have a very content fat cat who has plonked herself on my arm/chest meaning i have to type one handed while she purrs in my ear ;)

tbh I would wait with the grooming let him settle in a bit unless there are any big mats that would need taking off for comfort. You will get a neater finish if he can be bathed during the groom.

If he is matted already an extra 10 days arent going to make a differnce. You willl find its better to wait till after he has heald and them that way he will succumb to grooming easier and it will be that little bit more pleasant for him not being sore as hell. I personally dont touch dogs even if they have disolvables that after a week are gone and the recomendation is 10 days. They need time for the swelling to go down.

And as Cockerlover said most groomers wont clip an unwashed dog cause it damamges clippers plus they arent going to be able to turn him out looking anyhting decent with a wash and fluff too.

Thanks for your replies everyone, from what I saw yesterday it doesn't seem to be causing him any difficulties getting about and the matting is all hair (not hair + filth) so there is no real urgency and I'll wait until he's fully recovered from the de-sexing.

He's a sweet young boy and I'm not going to risk him being uncomfortable and making life hard for the groomer when it can wait.

Thanks all!

I tend to clip off matted dogs before i bath them. Once the mats are clipped off then i bath/dry and finish the clip. I'd still wait till his stitches are out though just to be safe. I prefer not to bathe matted dogs unless the clippers can't get into the coat because of the dirt; i much prefer to shave them down first.
