Teeth Cleaning

Hi,

I was just wondering how much you pay for getting your dogs teeth cleaned? Is this something I should be doing? If so, how often? Mine dont have problems with their teeth at all but thought it might be a good idea to get them checked out and cleaned...

I spoke to my vet and she said they would need to be put under and it would cost about $250... I didnt realise it would be so expensive... but I could be wrong...

Any help would be appreciated...

Thanks :o

Thats about what I would expect, higher if there are any extractions, take home meds or options such as preanaesthetic blood tests and intravenous fluids.

It is a full general anaesthetic, with a full scale and polish, including subgingival cleaning, as well as the day in hospital.

We charge $176 for the anaesthetic (more if you want an upgraded anaesthetic such as Alfaxan), plus around $30 for materials and then the scale and polish is anywhere from $99 for a Grade 1 up to around $150 (I think) for a Grade 3 (based on the condition of the dogs teeth). Extractions are extra, the cost is based on the time taken to perform the extractions. Pain relief and antibiotics, if necessary, are also an additional cost. Depending on whether the client wants the PA ($66) and/or intra-op fluids ($48), our dentals routinely reach the $400-500 mark.

So I would say your quote of $250 is pretty good! :o

For a geriatric dog (8 years and over) we always recommend a PA, to check their kidney and liver function. It helps to highlight any problems the dog may have metabolising the anaesthetic.

So is getting your dogs teeth cleaned say annually something that you should do and from what age is this recommended?

If you were to get your dogs teeth cleaned from an early age obviously this would keep the cost down in the future and

hopefully prevent or catch any problems that may occur.
