trishalouise
My Mini Poodle has bad ears - surprised??!! They are really hairy and when she was desexed last week they had a proper look in them - ear canals full of matted hair Anyway, we were given some drops to put in twice a day for a week. Turns out she is a devil dog when it comes to having ear drops!! I did them for the first day and then gave up as it was causing her too much distress. While brushing her today I thought I would try some desensitisation stuff. Started off just lifting her ear flap, click and reward. Moved on slowly step by step and aftr about 10 minutes actually got a drop in each ear without her struggling!!! I figure that we will have a lifetime of ear issues with her so better to put the time into training her to accept it now rather than fighting with her for the next 12 years!!! I am quite proud of this little puppy and had to have a brag!!!! Trish :p
PAX
Poodle ears are meant to be plucked, when her ear infection clears up get a groomer or poodle person to teach you how to do it. I hope the vets plucked them while she was under GA.
denis_c
I am not at all suprised by the need to keep your poodles ears clean. http://www.dolforums.com.au/style_emoticon...n_smile_mad.gif It is one of the few unpleaant aspects of the breed. All sorts of people do all sorts of things, but i just casually pluck them when she is sitting on my lap every second day. There is an art to it, and where you have to put your fingers is a bit suprising. She now couldn't care less. Also, it is a good idea for any dog to feel that touching their ears could be a good thing. A sort of ttouch excercise is to run your hands along their ears with a tiny amount of tension. (Need to be shown this). She moans and groans and goes into a kind of seventh heaven. My basic rule is that attention to her ears by crathing or rubbing on the ground is most likely a vet visit. I have had one bout of infections.

Yeah - I do know that!! When they have been plucked the hair has been breaking off. She goes to the groomers every 4 weeks and they do her ears there. I also do them a couple of times a week when I brush her.

ETA The vet did actually use haemostat to gently get it all out while she was anaethetised so this stuff sounds like it might be perfect.
