black magic
My Lab puppy was given the kennel cough spray vaccine at the vet on sat evening. Last night I awoke at 1am to hear her coughing really bad, almost sounded like she was choking, or trying to cough up something and she did throw up a little bit of white phlegm like stuff I was wondering if the vaccine can cause a case of kennel cough? She was in her crate so I don't think she ate anything strange. She is still her happy self, and is eating ok, the cough hasn't been to bad today, she only coughed once. but last night it really worried me, had it not settled down like it did at 3am I was going to call the vet. (First time dog owner it freaked me out a bit). Has anyone experienced this before. Should I still take her to the vet? Thanks
Guest Tess32
She may have just caught KC anyway - take her to vet
puggy_puggy
My vet doesn't like the up the nose KC vaccination as most dogs will get a gunky nose and a bit sick from it. He said that he only uses it if the dogs need immunisation in the next few days as it works faster then the injection. So no your pup should be fine and should be able to ride out the snotty nose stuff.
Cavandra
It is the nasal spray that has done it..........Happens an awful lot .........The first & last time I ever used it was many years ago.........I thought I would lose a litter they were so sick, with green snot, severe lethargy, hacking their guts up etc.....the Vet reported it, and the drug company was to get in touch with me about it, I am still waiting!!!!!!!!! Tell the vet to put in an adverse reaction report, they need to stop using this on puppies!!!!
stormie
It could also be totally unrelated... She might have just inhaled some fluff or had something else bugger her in the back of her throat...
black magic
Hi, Thanks for the replies. My OH rang the vet and spoke to them about our pup. They said that they can get a small dose of KC after the vaccination spray. I'm a bit cranky, as I did ask the vet after her vaccinations if there would be side effects, but they said she could be tired but thats all. Had i been informed I prob would have been a bit prepared for the horrible gagging which woke me in the early hours of the morning. Anyway I'm sure I'll have many hair raising moments in the future. She is getting better, only seems to cough and hack when she goes outside in the cold, or late at night.
Teebs
We did a litter with the spray, and kaos got it last week. All doing fine, Kaos did get a little runny nose, but as she had has Canine cough the last few weeks, a little snotty nose was better than the big one she had (no, i didnt vacc her while she was sick, or because she was sick! HEr Vac expired on the 17th, so she was due ) this is the 3rd time we have had Canine cough, and the first time i have taken them to the vet because of it, and only because kaos lost 3kgs in a few days from coughing, normally i let it run its course and use benadryl hope thepup feels better soon :D
poocow
Hope your pup feels better. I have used the BIII on my two dogs twice each now with no side effects. The nasal vax was mandatory at the kennel I used to work at and not one case of KC came through.
luvsdogs
I had heard bad things about the nasal spray & was very relieved when Tilba was vaccinated that they didn't give it to her. Years ago when it 1st came out April was given a dose of it because of going from a C4 to a C5. She had no side effects but she was about 8 or 9 yrs at the time. A I'd change vets - you should have been advised of the possible side effects, not just told that she could be a "bit tired". C5 vaccinations are notorious for causing adverse effects in puppies, and IMO should never be given to them unless they need it for boarding. As the KC component only lasts for 6 months anyway, it can be given later if needed. The adverse effects can be serious, even lethal. Most cases of KC I have seen have been in dogs vaccinated against it, frequently within a fortnight of getting it - it only covers a few varieties out of many possible ones.
