fourbouy
Hi, Oscar my 20 month goldie STINKS of Balsam, or pine or eucalyptus, but to me it's more balsam. He goes in the brackish Swan river each morning, & the ocean at the week-end. I think he seems more oily around the first 300mm forward of this tail on the top of his back. He looks WONDERFUL & his coat is very soft, but has heavy dandruff underneath that is apparant when I brush him. As a puppy he was dark underneath & the vet said he should be pink & she was concerned about allergies. We tried the elimination diet, but you know goldies, short of muzzling him, you just couldn't stop him eating plants, grass, garbage cat poo, oh yes dog poo, duck poo, horse poo!! We now feed him the Hills Science food for sensitive skins, which he loves. Can anyone offer me any advice? It will be gratefully appreciated. Kind regards, Andy
Poodle wrangler
Could it be leftover shampoo?? I've done this myself after thinking I'd rinsed it all out. Rinse, rinse, rinse and if you're in the shower use a hose to get to skin level. Brushing right down to the skin is advised, then follow up with a comb. You'll see any problems asap that way as well as avoiding knots. A knotted coat doesn't "breathe" very well. Some people suggest adding fish oils to the diet for dry skin/ allergies- either cheap sardines from the supermarket (oily fish) or capsules. puggy_puggy
The darkened and smelly skin sounds to me like a yeast infection. I would get him off all dry food and any grains you might be feeding him and change over to either a RAW or BARF diet.
Dogsfevr
Hill sis the worst for grains etc etc. Do you bath the dog often after swimming in the river & ocean.?? The swan river is pretty gross & all that yuck builds up on the dogs skin

Hi, thanks for your suggestions, however, he doesn't get shampooed at all since he swam every day, & his coat & skin have been fantastic since, it's just the smell I'm concerned about. I think it's the food really, I'm just wanting confirmation. Once or twice a week, I comb him, and then we vacuum him with pet grooming vacuum nozzles!! He loves it. shmoo
I would stop letting him swim so much. It's playing up with the natural oils on his coat.
ellz
I can think of worse things than Balsam that he could smell of! :D On a side note, did you know that many Afghans from older lines actually smell like sandalwood? Absolutely true and not a word of a fib!!
